IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the percentage where dance classes are held in a town in Australia. While the bar graph shows the number of students performing the three different dance classes by age group.
Overall, almost half of the dance classes are performed in private studios. Meanwhile, most of the age group under 11 is enrolled in ballet classes, while age group under 11 to 16 likes to attend modern dance classes.
As can be seen, 48% of the students goes to private studios for dance lessons. The rest of the children have their dance classes in school halls (after-school), community halls and others, and college-based studios with 24%, 18%, and 10% respectively.
Moreover, the group of students have clearly different preference when it comes to dance lessons. Ballet have 600 students under 11 and 300 students of ages 11-16. In contrast to modern dance class, there are more than 500 student of ages 11-16, while there are only 300 of students under the age of 11. They have almost the same number of students enrolled to the tap dance class with at least more than 400 numbers for each age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview: private studios are the largest location category, and the leading dance style differs by age group. Most figures are reported accurately, including the location percentages and the ballet and modern comparisons. The main factual weakness is the overview’s claim that the 11–16 group prefers modern: modern is highest at about 520, so this is correct, but the under-11 group’s ballet lead is also clearly identified. The tap comparison is relevant, though “almost the same” could be supported more precisely by noting the approximate figures of 450 and 420. To strengthen the report further, make the overview more comprehensive by highlighting the contrasting age-group patterns and avoid vague descriptions such as “the rest of the children.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The four-paragraph structure is appropriate, moving from an introduction and overview to details about locations and dance styles. The progression is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Meanwhile,” “Moreover,” and “In contrast” help signal relationships between points. This shows a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections are mechanical or imprecise: “As can be seen” adds little, while “the rest of the children” does not clearly refer to the remaining location percentages. The final paragraph also moves through ballet, modern, and tap without a fully consistent comparison pattern. For stronger cohesion, group the age-group figures by dance style and use clear references to the two age groups throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for describing the charts, with useful terms such as “percentage,” “age group,” “in contrast,” and “enrolled.” The response communicates the main comparisons without serious difficulty. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “the percentage where dance classes are held” is awkward, “students performing the three different dance classes” does not accurately describe participation, and “likes to attend” is informal for a data report. “Numbers” is also less suitable than “students” when reporting quantities. Aim for more precise chart language and avoid repeating “dance classes” where “styles” or “lessons” would be clearer. This would make the vocabulary more natural and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “While” and a comparison beginning “In contrast to.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors recur and limit accuracy. For example, “48% of the students goes” has subject–verb disagreement; “Ballet have 600 students” also needs a singular construction such as “Ballet has” or a different sentence structure. The phrase “age group under 11 to 16” is not grammatically formed, and “more than 400 numbers for each age group” has an unclear noun phrase. Check agreement, articles, and plural forms, and ensure introductory clauses such as “While the bar graph shows…” are attached to a complete sentence rather than standing alone.
