IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates types of dance classes which are being attended by the young people in different locations of Australia.

Overall, what stands out from the chart is that the major number of people are learning dance from private studios, whereas the lowest number of community is found in college-based studios. While ballet was the popular choice among students under the age of eleven, modern dance classes were more popular with students aged eleven to sixteen.

Looking at the details, private studios are holding majiority of the community people with around 48%. School halls also seems to be popular with around 24% of the total students. On the other hand community halls and college-based studios was not found more interested among the learners. Ballet dancing was more popular among the students of age under eleven and around 600 people are currently attending Ballet dancing. In contrast, Modern dancing was the first choice of people which lies in the age of eleven to sixteen and the total number of students are approximately 520. However, Tap dancing were at the same level for both the age groups and on average of 450 students of both groups are attending Tap dance classes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main patterns in both charts: private studios account for the largest share of class locations, and ballet is strongest among under-11s while modern is strongest among 11–16-year-olds. The figures you give for these features are broadly accurate. However, the overview says the “lowest number” is in college-based studios, although the chart reports percentages rather than numbers of people; it would be clearer to say this location has the smallest share. Some comparisons are also imprecise: tap is not at the same level for both age groups (about 450 versus 420), and “on average of 450 students of both groups” misrepresents the data. Include the 300-versus-600 ballet comparison and the 300-versus-520 modern comparison more explicitly to support the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of supporting details. The overview usefully brings together the location and age-group charts, and transitions such as “While,” “In contrast,” and “However” help signal comparisons. The progression is generally easy to follow, but the final paragraph moves between location figures and dance types without a fully consistent grouping. The sentence about tap also makes the comparison harder to follow because it says the groups are at the same level and then gives an average rather than comparing their separate figures. Organise the details in two clear sections—locations first, then dance types—and use direct comparisons to make the progression more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “private studios,” “school halls,” “popular choice,” and “in contrast,” so the main information is understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate word choices and collocations that reduce precision. “The major number of people” is not a natural way to describe the largest percentage, and “the lowest number of community” is unclear. “Holding majiority of the community people” and “not found more interested among the learners” also do not express the chart data naturally. Spelling errors such as “majiority” further weaken control. Prefer concise, conventional chart language—for example, “accounted for the largest share” and “was the least common location”—and use “students” consistently when describing attendance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “While ballet was the popular choice…” and a sentence beginning “Looking at the details.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “School halls also seems,” the plural subject requires “seem”; “college-based studios was” likewise needs plural agreement. The construction “the total number of students are” should use “is,” while “Tap dancing were” should be “Tap dancing was.” There are also awkward sentence patterns, such as “the total number of students are approximately 520,” which would be clearer as “approximately 520 students attend.” Check subject–verb agreement and make sure each sentence has a clear, grammatically complete comparison.
