IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Today, many countries are able to import food produced from all the around the world and sell it in their supermarkets. This is due to globalization which has made trade easier thereby allowing people to access food while being in their native country.
It can be considered as a form of positive development as people can consume different food items produced in various countries at their home without the need to travel to another place and taste it. For example, I can eat Swiss chocolates exported to my country without actually travelling to Switzerland.
On the contrary note, it can be considered as a negative development in the light that while trying to consume food from different places, people tend to forget about the local produce which gets badly affected with regards to their production and sales. If their sales are affected, then the prices of other local produce also experiences negative impact. The economic side of supply and demand changes negatively for the local food production in this process.
In conclusion, I would say that it is a positive development because people are able to experience and cherish different types of food from across the globe. But these food items should be consumed in moderation such that the local food produce does not get affected negatively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the question and give a clear overall view: international food availability is positive, although local producers may be harmed. The Swiss chocolate example supports the benefit of access, and the discussion of local sales introduces a relevant drawback. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the benefit is illustrated briefly, while the economic effect on local produce is asserted without a specific explanation or example. Your conclusion adds the sensible qualification that imported food should be consumed in moderation, but this condition is not explained in the body. The response is also 33 words below the required minimum, leaving limited space to develop your reasoning. Extend the main points with concrete consequences and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting a benefit, a paragraph discussing a drawback, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two body paragraphs is easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly “On the contrary note,” and the opening explanation about globalization does not lead smoothly into the first reason. The final qualification about moderation also appears suddenly rather than being prepared in the discussion. To improve progression, use more natural transitions and make each paragraph develop one central point through explanation and supporting detail.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “globalization,” “local produce,” “supply and demand,” and “exported,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “in the light that,” though this is not a natural collocation. Other expressions are imprecise or repetitive: “food items” and “different types of food” recur, while “prices of other local produce” is unclear in context. “Cherish” is also an unusual choice for enjoying food. Aim for more precise terms for the effects on local businesses and producers, and check collocations so that formal vocabulary sounds natural rather than forced.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “food items produced in various countries” and a conditional structure in “If their sales are affected.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your position. Some grammatical inaccuracies are present, however. In “all the around the world,” the article is unnecessary; in “prices … also experiences,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject; and “while trying to consume food … people tend to forget” has an unclear reference to who is trying. The long sentence beginning “This is due to globalization” would also benefit from clearer punctuation. Review agreement and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
