IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many parts of the world, supermarkets offer consumers the opportunity to purchase food items sourced from around the globe. This pattern presents both positive and negative aspects.

The increasing popularity of imported food products can be beneficial to a certain extent. One prominent advantage is that consumers would have access to a variety of choices that are not locally available, enhancing the culinary experiences and fostering exposure to different cultures through food. For instance, people can enjoy exotic fruits such as apples from New Zealand or fascinating cuisine from other countries. In addition to this, the food import-export activities play a crucial role in the development of the local economy. Many specific sectors like retail and logistics demand a large workforce, which create numerous job opportunities for local residents. Thus, the international food market greatly benefits both consumers and the economy.

There are indeed some disadvantages of the availability of international food products. One glaring drawback is the negative impact on the environment. The transportation of food over long distances requires a large amount of petroleum, having a detrimental effect on natural resources. This also contributes a significant amount of carbon emissions to the atmosphere, leading to such severe natural crises like climate change and global warming. Worse still, the prevalence of imported food items might take a toll on the local agriculture. Local farmers and producers may struggle to compete with attractive products available at the supermarket, leading to a potential decline of local food production and loss of agricultural heritage.

In conclusion, while the global availability of food in supermarkets offer increased variety and economic benefits, it also raises environmental concerns and potential risks to local agriculture.
