Student answer (Band 7.0)
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
In several regions, shoppers are allowed to go to a supermarket and purchase food across the world. Although I mostly see that it is a positive development, the negative aspects can influence the process, including the price, time and quality of the products.
The good points of having food in all supermarkets from all around the world are cultural and economic benefits. Transporting special ingredients that only grow in certain places can bring different cultures together by its flavours. For example, Japanese soft rice cake called mochi wasn't well-known until it was transferred to another country, meaning that sellers of mochi traded their goods in foreign countries to expand their business. Today, individuals from all countries have access to foods that are originated in many homelands, thanks to transportation and the embrace of different cultures.
The negative impacts of trading foods with other countries are time, pricing and delivery. Some immigrants run restaurants and food businesses in foreign countries to increase their earnings. However, they sell their products at a higher cost, reasoning that the ingredients are expensive, which makes it unappealing to consumers. Thus, the delivery from another country could take a long period of time, leading the local ingredients have lower quality.
Additionally, Internationally famous food could blur the locals’ traditional meals, making buyers biased towards certain types of foods.
To sum it up, although I mostly agree that the development of food transportation is beneficial due to the bringing between nations together, appreciating each others cuisine choices, I believe mass production of certain countries’ could lead consumers to ignore their own cultural meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing both positive and negative aspects of global food trade. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the cultural benefits are supported by an example, the negative points regarding 'time, pricing and delivery' are less clearly explained and feel slightly disjointed. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it introduces a slightly new nuance about 'mass production' that was not fully explored in the body paragraphs. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different themes. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'For example', 'However', and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the connection between the negative impacts of immigration and the quality of ingredients in the second body paragraph is somewhat tenuous and could be more explicitly linked to the main topic of global food trade.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'mass production', 'cultural benefits', and 'cuisine choices'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or phrasing, such as 'transferred to another country' (instead of 'exported' or 'introduced') and 'bringing between nations together' (which is grammatically awkward). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Improving your collocation usage would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'foods that are originated' (should be 'originate'), 'leading the local ingredients have lower quality' (should be 'leading to lower quality local ingredients'), and 'bringing between nations together'. Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentence constructions are slightly clunky. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of participial phrases would be beneficial.
