In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the recent times, majority of countries have the availability of products and foods from around the world in their nearby supermarkets. Consumers now have the opportunity to buy local produce from different parts of the world. While some believe this may be a negative development, I truly think the advantages outweigh the negative aspects.

With the increase in exports and trade for the exchange of multiple products and cultural foods, it can lead to better connections between multiple countries. For instance, by India trading their tea spices in exchange for luxury desserts from France can create a harmony between both the countries and end any future possibilities of war. It can also thread to peace treaties and help create harmony between countries.

Having a vast number of options at different stores will allow local citizens from less financial backgrounds to explore and experience a variety of products at a cheaper rate. It gives consumers a chance to embrace different ethnicities from their own towns or cities.

While some may argue that with different cultures of food being accumulated in one place, it has the possibility to remove all the originality from the food. For example, having a spice grown to one particular place to having it transported to the rest of the world will destroy the uniqueness of the produce. However, I believe the joy of sharing the taste is more beautiful and it is such experiences which results in bringing people together.

Personally, consumers being able to experience different foods from different origins is a positive advancement over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding international relations and consumer benefits. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example of India trading spices for French desserts is a bit simplistic and lacks a realistic economic basis, which weakens the argument's persuasiveness. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more grounded in reality and that you fully explore the implications of your arguments. The conclusion is clear, but the overall development remains somewhat superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance', 'However', and 'While some may argue', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical. For example, the link between 'trading spices' and 'ending war' is a significant logical leap that lacks sufficient connective explanation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural progression of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'exports', 'trade', 'peace treaties', and 'ethnicities'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'thread to peace treaties' (which is incorrect usage) and 'accumulated in one place' (which is slightly awkward in this context). To improve, focus on more precise collocations and avoid using words that do not quite fit the intended meaning. The vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'In the recent times' (should be 'In recent times'), 'majority of countries' (should be 'the majority of countries'), and 'grown to one particular place' (should be 'grown in one particular place'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and refining your complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
