Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's globalized world, the availability of food from different countries has become increasingly crucial. While many people argue that it has many negative consequences, I believe that it has a positive impact on the modern world because it provides a wide range of food.

On the one hand, the availability of food products from several countries has become significant. Firstly, it enables consumers to experience various cultures and traditional food, which has become extremely essential. This is because experiencing different varieties of food helps individuals to understand the value of traditional food. For example, many Bangladeshi supermarkets offer a wide variety of food, such as Australian apples, Italian pasta, which have never been produced locally. As a result, although sometimes these foods have become excessively expensive, people still enjoy purchasing these fruits and vegetables.

Furthermore, importing food from different countries plays a vital role in international trade because it encourages a healthy competition between producers and consumers. Besides, this competition helps them to produce high-quality food. For instance, many supermarkets provide fresh food in Europe, which are cultivated in South Asia to meet consumer demand throughout the year. In addition, it allows farmers and sellers to produce more food products and sell globally throughout the year. Hence, importing a wide range of products from several parts of the world has become extremely beneficial for people since it helps them to gain access to high-quality food.

In conclusion, the topic of availability of food from several countries has become a matter of great concern. Even though imported products can be quite expensive because of high tax, I believe that the opportunities to acquire several sources of food from overseas are more significant because it provides the chances to try several cultural and traditional food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a positive position. The ideas are relevant, such as cultural exposure and international trade benefits. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument about 'traditional food' is mentioned multiple times without significant expansion. While the examples provided (Bangladeshi supermarkets, European imports) are relevant, the analysis remains at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the implications of these points more deeply, perhaps by discussing the environmental impact or the economic trade-offs in greater detail to provide a more balanced and comprehensive argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is a tendency to repeat phrases like 'throughout the year' and 'different countries' within the same paragraph, which affects the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use less common items like 'globalized,' 'crucial,' and 'cultivated.' However, there are some issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'encourages a healthy competition' (better: 'fosters healthy competition') and 'gain access to high-quality food.' The repetition of basic words like 'food' and 'products' limits the range. To improve, you should focus on using more precise synonyms and collocations to demonstrate a more sophisticated control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'which have never been produced locally' is a bit clunky, and 'which are cultivated in South Asia' refers back to 'fresh food' (singular/uncountable), creating a subject-verb agreement error. Punctuation is mostly accurate, but some sentences are slightly awkward in their construction. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure that subject-verb agreement and relative clause usage are consistently accurate throughout the text.
