Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, with growing advancements in infrastructure during logistics and transportation, we can now easily get different foods manufactured in other parts of the world. Although all these foods are packaged and undoubtedly unhealthy, I believe this is a positive development.

One major reason for my stand is the choices immigrants get while living away from home. Different nationals have different food choices, so many will be elated if they get whatever they want, no matter where they live. This will help people live a healthy, stress-free life. Ultimately helping the businesses, which contribute to society. In addition, those individuals who are interested in trying different cuisines do not have to travel across the oceans to explore; many people get to explore a variety of food without spending much and saving a significant amount of time.

On the other hand, when we get food from different nations, it is definitely all packaged with lots of added food preservatives, which are considered unhealthy. Similarly, it is hard to translate the nutritional values, which will be a struggle for those health-conscious individuals. However, these imported foods go through food security measures, where they check everything, so, as an immigrant myself, it really feels like home when we get our accustomed food while living away from home.

In conclusion, food produced in different parts of the world is made available to consumers. Although some believe these are mostly packaged, unhealthy food, I believe it is a positive development, especially for immigrants and food enthusiasts, saving time and money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified the positive aspects, specifically focusing on the needs of immigrants and the convenience for food enthusiasts. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'businesses' is vague and lacks specific explanation. While you acknowledge the negative aspects, the discussion remains somewhat superficial. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with concrete examples or deeper analysis. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of the arguments could be improved to better support the 'positive development' claim.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Ultimately' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing immigrant food choices to the benefit for businesses is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a central theme. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the logical progression between sentences is more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'infrastructure', 'elated', and 'accustomed'. There are some instances of slightly imprecise word choice, such as 'manufactured in other parts of the world' (food is usually 'produced' or 'grown') and 'during logistics' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is room for more precision and natural collocation. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to global trade and food supply chains to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'Ultimately helping the businesses' (a sentence fragment) and 'all these foods are packaged and undoubtedly unhealthy' (a slight overgeneralization). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor issues with sentence construction that prevent the writing from being fully fluent. To reach a higher band, aim for more complex sentence structures and ensure that all sentences are complete and grammatically sound. Focus on avoiding sentence fragments and improving the accuracy of your complex clauses.
