Student answer (Band 6.0)
Introduction
Nowadays, supermarkets sell food that is imported from many different countries, giving people a wide range of choices throughout the year. Although this trend has a few disadvantages, I believe it is a positive development because it provides greater food variety and supports international trade.
Body Paragraph 1
The main reason why this is a positive development is that people can enjoy a greater variety of food regardless of the season. For example, consumers can buy tropical fruits, foreign vegetables and international snacks even if these products cannot be grown locally. As a result, people have healthier and more enjoyable food options throughout the year. Therefore, the availability of food from around the world improves consumers' choices and quality of life.
Body Paragraph 2
Another important reason is that global food trade benefits the economy and creates business opportunities. Farmers and food companies can export their products to other countries, which increases their income and creates more jobs. For instance, India exports spices and rice to many nations, while it imports fruits such as kiwi and apples. Thus, international food trade supports economic growth and benefits both producers and consumers.
Other Side
On the other hand, some people believe that imported food can harm local farmers because customers may prefer foreign products. In addition, transporting food over long distances may increase pollution. However, these problems can be reduced if governments support local agriculture while allowing international trade to continue.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I believe that selling food from all over the world in supermarkets is a positive development. The advantages of having more food choices and stronger international trade clearly outweigh the disadvantages, provided that local farmers receive proper support.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it consistently throughout the essay. Each body paragraph provides relevant, well-developed ideas, such as the benefits of seasonal variety and the economic impact of international trade. You also acknowledge the counter-argument regarding environmental concerns and local farmers, which demonstrates a balanced approach. The ideas are extended with specific examples, such as India's export of rice and spices, which adds depth to your argument. The conclusion effectively summarizes your main points, ensuring the task requirements are met with a clear, logical structure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although', 'For example', 'As a result', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each section serving a distinct purpose in the overall structure. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural, making the essay easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'international food trade', 'economic growth', and 'quality of life' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would push the score into the highest band. However, the word choice is consistently appropriate for the context, and there are no spelling or collocation errors that impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific terminology to convey your ideas clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although this trend has a few disadvantages, I believe it is a positive development because it provides greater food variety and supports international trade.' The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your writing. While the range of structures is solid, incorporating a slightly wider variety of advanced grammatical forms, such as inversion or more complex conditional structures, could further enhance the sophistication of your writing.
