In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, citizens of many countries can visit a supermarket and purchase groceries produced globally. I shall explain both positive and negative views before agreeing that it is a positive development.
On the one hand, residents find it convenient to visit a supermarket and acquire food which is grown in other countries. They assert that not every nation can produce all food products. Hence, in a globally-connected world, the population should have the options to acquire imported food. For instance, numerous types of steaks are only available from American, European, Canadian and Australian products. Furthermore, the foreign fruits and vegetables have the best quality and aesthetics which cannot be prepared in local cities due to shortage of modern agricultural methods.
On the other hand, individuals argue that imported food may be unhealthy because other nations don't follow the same cultures which are followed locally. For instance, the general public of islamic countries, are reluctant to purchase imported meat from America and Europe because it is not Halal. Moreover, the quality of imported snacks such as chocolates, chips and biscuits is low as compared to local brands. Therefore, it is not a good practice to acquire imported food.
In my opinion, purchasing imported meat, vegetables, fruits and other products is an excellent way of staying healthy and fit. Individuals can enjoy the same variety of products which an American or European enjoys. The concerns about Halal meat are genuine but it can be easily verified by seeing the Halal sticker on a meat product. In addition, various supermarkets have separate Halal sections. Moreover, snacks made by international brands possess same quality all over the world.
In conclusion, in today's world, citizens have the luxury to obtain products of different nations in their cities. The concerns about Halal meat and snacks quality are valid but meat can be reviewed at the spot. Similarly, snacks produced by multinational companies are of equal quality around the globe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for both sides of the argument and supported your opinion with examples. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the claim that imported snacks are of 'low quality' is a broad generalization that could have been supported with more specific detail. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more nuanced and fully explored. Overall, the response is relevant and the position is consistent, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the link between the paragraph about Halal meat and the following paragraph about personal opinion could be more effectively integrated. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'globally-connected,' 'aesthetics,' and 'multinational companies.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'reviewed at the spot' (should be 'verified on the spot') and 'possess same quality' (missing an article). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is sometimes lacking. To improve, focus on collocations and ensuring that your word choices are natural and contextually appropriate. The current range is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly without difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the general public of islamic countries') and minor issues with pluralization and prepositions. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and subject-verb agreement. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain the reader's interest throughout the response.
