Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recently, consumers in a lot of country can easily access food produced globally in a supermarket. I strongly believe this development is beneficial to individuals.

The most significant advantage of having access to international sourced food is the increase in the varieties of food. Nowadays, citizens of different countries easily find intercontinental food produce in a supermarket and are able to experience other cultures aside theirs. For example, when an individuals craves for food made outside their country, they can easily get it in a common place like a store, instead of holding in the craving until whenever he or she visits that country. Furthermore, this development has a beneficial impact on importers and exporters, importation and exportation of food produce has been a great source of income for most farmers, the money made from this business is said to have sustained a lot of families.

Although getting international food produce in supermarkets are beneficial to humans, however, there are down sides to this development. Firstly, the cost of transportation may be too high, consequently making international foods expensive and unaffordable to the lower class citizens. Another disadvantage is that due to the long distance, some food produce may end up spoiling as a result of heat. More so, there is high competition among those in the business of importation and exportation. Also, some farmers tend to add certain chemicals which is unhealthy to the human body into their food produce for it to last long.

In conclusion, although there are downsides to this development, however, I believe the benefits outweighs the downside and it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that the development is positive. The ideas are relevant, covering both the benefits (variety, cultural experience, economic impact) and the drawbacks (cost, spoilage, competition, chemical usage). However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about farmers using chemicals is introduced but not fully explored in terms of its broader implications. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your arguments with more specific examples or deeper analysis rather than listing several points in a single paragraph. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Although', 'Firstly', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some issues with the mechanical use of these devices. For example, the sentence 'Although getting international food produce in supermarkets are beneficial to humans, however, there are down sides' contains a redundant use of 'although' and 'however'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the benefits and drawbacks. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'intercontinental', 'importers', and 'exporters'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'holding in the craving' instead of 'suppressing the craving' or 'resisting the urge'. You also use 'produce' as a noun correctly, but the phrasing 'food produce' is slightly repetitive. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'consumers in a lot of country' should be 'countries', and 'an individuals craves' should be 'an individual craves'. There is also a subject-verb agreement error in 'getting international food produce... are beneficial', which should be 'is beneficial'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some comma splices and run-on sentences. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication.
