Student answer (Band 6.0)

In an increasing number of countries nowadays, customers can visit to local supermarkets and purchase food cultivated in other countries in different parts of the world. Although it has some negative consequences, I believe it is an overall positive development because customers can find any food item in one place and taste them without visiting those countries.

One of the major advantages of finding food item in one place is it is economically beneficial for consumers. Many tourist visit in foreign countries in order to explore local dishes and culture of those particular country which is extremely costly for those visitors. If a person find others countries in their local supermarket, they can try those food without visiting those countries. For instance, visiting others countries often need many expenses such as visa fee, air ticket fee and local accommodation fess. Consequently, it is quite expensive to visit others countries to try their local dishes and many people are economically unable to visit others countries. Furthermore, less visit in overseas means less air travel which is also an important factor of reducing carbon emissions by air plane. However, there are also some negative consequence of finding overseas food in local supermarket. First of all, local farmers did not get proper profit from their produced items as foreigner visits less in their country. Many business party purchase local products from the farmers in a cheap price. Secondly, as foreigner find food items on their own country, it reduces the numbers of tourists in many countries which is a great threat for those countries. For instance, Many tourist visits Thailand to explore their exceptional food item, if visitors find those in their respective country, it wiil reduce the numbers of visitors in Thailand. In my opinion, the people who have financial ability the should visit in those countries. In conclusion, finding food in local produced in others countries is a positive development because it can reduce the cost of local people and carbon emission in the atmosphere by air plane.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the development is positive. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits for consumers and the environmental impact of reduced air travel. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. For example, the argument regarding local farmers is a bit repetitive and lacks depth. While the position is clear throughout, some arguments, particularly the link between supermarket food and tourism decline, are slightly over-generalized. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more nuanced reasoning rather than relying on repetitive phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore,' 'However,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. There are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the economic benefits and the environmental impact. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the use of 'those countries' which occasionally creates ambiguity regarding which specific nations are being discussed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'carbon emissions,' 'accommodation,' and 'cultivated.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choices and collocation errors, such as 'business party' instead of 'businesses' or 'commercial entities,' and 'finding food item' instead of 'accessing global food products.' The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of precision and occasional misuse of terms prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations would significantly improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Many tourist visit,' 'If a person find') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in pluralization and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb forms throughout the essay. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy is key to moving up the band scale.
