In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In several countries worldwide, people have been given the privilege of consuming and investing in food produced elsewhere. Many will view this as a negative development due to the confusion that may come with providing so many variants of the same item, as well as the possibility cultural and health-related risks. However, this essay will cover why I believe that to this development there are many benefits.
Those who oppose this development entirely and view the introduction of food from elsewhere to be disadvantageous often claim that it acts as an erasure of their countries' cultural identity and that it may pose some confusion when shopping. By providing different productions, foreign items may be favoured over native ones, which may be seen as a negative impact on culture and tradition. Additionally, they insist that it must be greatly confusing to be met with ten different kinds of meat and it may lead to customers being overwhelmed and worried. Conversely, I believe that providing several productions strengthens unity and cultural identity rather than weakening it.
Nowadays, when you visit your local supermarket, you will find a plethora of vegetables, grains and meat from all over the world on display. You would think that the taste of rice, for example, would not differ from one country to another, but you would be surprised to find that that is not the case at all. As someone who engages in cooking frequently, I've found that Egyptian rice is particularly flavourful as opposed to Chinese rise, which comes off as bland in comparison. Providing an array of food items allows people to pick and choose the produce that is more suitable for their personal and cultural tastes without being restricted to one singular production. It leads to contentment and satisfaction. Most importantly, there should be no worry surrounding the health risks associated with food shipped from elsewhere as it was definitely thoroughly inspected before deeming it safe for consumption.
In conclusion, though many people believe the introduction of food items produced worldwide may be a negative development due to the cultural and health risks that come with it, I personally do not agree with this viewpoint. Instead, I believe that this will be a greatly positive development as it allows everyone to search for productions that better align with their personal tastes, allowing for comfortability and familiarity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the discussion of cultural identity and personal preference. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'cultural identity' is a bit abstract and could have been supported with more concrete examples beyond just rice. The point about health risks is addressed, but the explanation is brief. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more detailed reasoning or specific examples to fully flesh out the arguments, particularly regarding the 'negative' side of the debate, which is currently a bit underdeveloped compared to the 'positive' side.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the opposing view from the writer's own perspective. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Conversely', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the 'confusion' mentioned in the first paragraph and the 'ten different kinds of meat' in the second could be more tightly linked to improve the overall progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'erasure of their countries' cultural identity' and 'plethora of vegetables' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Chinese rise' (a typo for 'rice') and 'comfortability' (which is less natural than 'comfort'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the consistent flexibility and idiomatic control required for a higher band. The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but more precise collocations would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries. While most sentences are error-free, there are occasional slips, such as 'to this development there are many benefits' (awkward word order) and 'as it was definitely thoroughly inspected' (tense inconsistency). The grammar is generally accurate enough that communication is never impeded. To improve, the student should aim for a wider variety of complex structures and ensure that tense usage remains consistent throughout the essay, particularly when discussing hypothetical or general situations.
