Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is an ongoing about why consumers in many countries nowdays always prefer go to supermarket to purchase their daily groceries instead of going to the traditional market place like wet market to purchase their food. While others contend that locals peoples should support the local community market instead of department store. This essay will explain the reasons behind this behavior before explaining why I believe this is a positive development for most consumers.
Firstly, most people usually prefer go to supermarket to buy their daily groceries and food instead of traditional market because buying in supermarket provides several benefits. Supermarket have wide selection and great variety of foods or vegetables produced from all over the world compared to traditional market where they normally don't provides that many options for consumers. Customer don't need to go to market by market to look for the goods they want to buy instead they can finish their shopping inside a single department store. Furthermore, the pricing in supermarket generally maintain consistently and clearly compared to wet market where the price fluctuate a lot more and able to avoid dishonest merchant where they likely scam the consumer.
Secondly, the supermarket provide better shopping environment and convenience of amenties compared to the traditional market. Shopper can buy their groceries, household good and toiletries all under one roof which is big advantage for modern young adult as they often don't have much leisure for shopping around. In addition, supermarket usually come with air conditioning, bright light and shopping which is a huge convenience for consumers.
In conclusion, purchasing daily groceries or items inside supermarket come with numerous benefits. I believe supermarket is the better option for modern day people as they often lack time

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the shift toward global food sources in supermarkets. However, the introduction is slightly off-topic as it focuses on the comparison between supermarkets and traditional markets rather than the specific prompt regarding the global nature of food sourcing. While the position is clear, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. The essay focuses heavily on the convenience of supermarkets rather than the implications of global food distribution, such as environmental impact or economic effects. To improve, you should ensure your arguments directly address the 'global' aspect of the prompt and provide more depth to your supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. There are also issues with referencing and logical flow; for example, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is abrupt. Some sentences are poorly connected, making the progression of ideas feel disjointed at times. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word forms, such as 'locals peoples' instead of 'local people' and 'maintain consistently' instead of 'remain consistent'. The repetition of basic words like 'supermarket' and 'food' limits the lexical variety. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'globalisation', 'supply chain', 'consumer habits', or 'economic implications', and pay closer attention to correct word collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Supermarket have', 'Customer don't'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'prefer go to' instead of 'prefer going to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and verb patterns would be a beneficial first step.
