Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the availability of global food is beneficial. However, the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly in the middle of a sentence. This failure to provide a full conclusion significantly impacts the development of the argument. While the main body paragraphs attempt to support the position with ideas like variety and seasonal availability, the development is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. Furthermore, the response is slightly under the 250-word minimum, which, combined with the incomplete nature of the text, limits the ability to fully develop the ideas required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay shows an attempt at logical organization with clear paragraph breaks. There is some use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'One of the major merits', and 'To elaborate', which helps guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. The abrupt ending of the essay means that the final paragraph is not coherent, as it fails to summarize the main points or provide a final thought. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'in most origins on present days' and 'they can food from supermarkets'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to incorporate more sophisticated or academic terminology. While the meaning is generally clear, the limited range and the presence of errors in word choice prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to topic-specific vocabulary related to global trade and consumerism would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('buyer can to grocery stores'), missing articles, and incorrect preposition usage. Some sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'They also suggest to other people for buying fresh food.' These errors, while not always impeding communication, are frequent enough to be noticeable. The range of structures is limited, and the control over complex sentences is inconsistent, which is characteristic of the 5.0-5.5 band range.
