Student answer (Band 6.0)

Food consumption worldwide has seen a major change as now people from different countries can eat food which is produced in different parts of the world by buying it from their nearest grocery stores . I agree that it is a positive development as people can experience different cultures and can have authentic cuisines all from the comfort of their home country .

Firstly, citizens of all countries can consume international cuisines which are completely unique. This also helps to remove confusion and biasness regarding certain underappreciated cuisines like the Indian cuisine . Many people from the west are unaware that Indian cuisine does not only consist of overly spicy dishes ,by trying it via supermarkets they can experience the authentic taste first hand instead of relying other peoples opinion.

Furthermore, for businesses as well it is a very positive measure . As businesses from different parts of the world can expand into new markets across different countries helping to maintain quality of food products as they are aware of competition from other companies globally resulting in less wastages and lower costs eventually leading to an increase in profit margins.

However, there is also a concern that many companies due to this intense competition transition to using cheaper methods which include using hazardous chemicals like Red 40 which is a food color banned in the European Union due to its toxicity . These types of sweeteners and preservatives are proven to cause many digestive and even skin diseases harming the health of the public. Additionally, such is also done in order to improve the shelf life of the food products as they are exported via ships to other countries and it is a tie consuming process .

In conclusion, accessibility of global cuisines is very beneficial as it helps to remove doubts and rumors about misunderstood ethnic groups and it helps to make the world more interconnected as food helps countries represent a better picture of their region and culture .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that the development is positive while acknowledging the negative health implications. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the points regarding cultural exchange and business competition. However, the argument regarding the negative impact of food additives could be more tightly linked to the prompt's focus on global food availability. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it could have been more balanced by explicitly mentioning the health concerns raised in the body paragraph to provide a more nuanced final stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is handled well using the linker 'However'. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with punctuation, such as spaces before commas (e.g., 'stores .', 'dishes ,'), which makes the text look slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring standard punctuation would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good topic-specific terms such as 'authentic cuisines', 'profit margins', and 'hazardous chemicals'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'biasness' (which should be 'bias') and 'tie consuming' (which is a spelling error for 'time-consuming'). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, but more sophisticated collocations would be needed to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include missing articles ('relying other peoples opinion'), subject-verb agreement issues, and incorrect punctuation spacing. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed without errors in preposition or article usage.
