Student answer (Band 6.0)

Food consumption worldwide has seen a major change as now people from different countries can eat food which is produced in different parts of the world by buying it from their nearest grocery stores . I agree that it is a positive development as people can experience different cultures and can have authentic cuisines all from the comfort of their home country .

Firstly, citizens of all countries can consume international cuisines which are completely unique. This also helps to remove confusion and bias regarding certain underappreciated cuisines like the Indian cuisine . Many people from the west are unaware that Indian cuisine does not only consist of overly spicy dishes ,by trying it via supermarkets they can experience the authentic taste first hand instead of relying on other peoples opinion.

Furthermore, for businesses as well it is a very positive measure . As businesses from different parts of the world can expand into new markets across different countries helping to maintain quality of food products as they are aware of competition from other companies globally resulting in less waste and lower costs eventually leading to an increase in their profit margins.

However, there is also a concern that many companies due to this intense competition use cheaper methods like using hazardous chemicals including Red 40 which is a food color banned in the European Union due to its toxicity . These types of sweeteners and preservatives are proven to cause many digestive and even skin diseases harming the health of the public. Additionally, such is also done in order to improve the shelf life of the food products as they are exported via ships to other countries and it is a tie consuming process .

In conclusion, accessibility of global cuisines is very beneficial as it helps to remove doubts and rumors about misunderstood ethnic groups and it helps to make the world more interconnected as food helps countries represent a better picture of their region and culture .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the task by providing a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. Your ideas, such as cultural exchange and business expansion, are well-developed. However, the counter-argument regarding health risks is slightly less balanced in terms of depth compared to the benefits. To reach a higher band, ensure that the negative aspects are explored with the same level of detail as the positive ones. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, though it could have been slightly more concise to avoid repetition of the points already made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to signal transitions between paragraphs. While the structure is generally sound, some of the linking phrases feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the referencing within sentences could be improved; for example, in the final paragraph, 'such is also done' is a bit vague. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'authentic cuisines', 'underappreciated', and 'profit margins' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'tie consuming process' (likely meant 'time-consuming') and 'measure' when referring to a business strategy. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some of these choices are slightly imprecise. To improve, focus on using collocations more naturally and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as errors like 'tie' instead of 'time' can slightly distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as punctuation issues (e.g., spaces before commas) and minor subject-verb agreement or article usage errors (e.g., 'the Indian cuisine', 'the west'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for punctuation consistency and refining your use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help you achieve a higher band in this criterion.
