Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is true that in many countries, consumers go to supermarkets and buy food that is produced all over the world. In my opinion, it is a positive development because they can buy healthy food, which was not available previously, and countries can benefit economically.

Healthy food is now available in every supermarket. This is because local sellers now contact other retailers and may import healthy food into the market. For example, Mexican and Japanese foods such as mangoes, carrots, and sushi are now easily available nearby, which may be beneficial for those who lack vitamins. While critics argue that transporting food hurts the environment, the health benefits for consumers are far more important. As a result, trading international food is a highly beneficial trend for society.

Furthermore, countries can benefit from importing global food. Sellers import food at a cheap price and again sell it at a higher price. For instance, they import food like foreign beef and lamb meat and sell those at a larger profit. They receive money and consistently contribute to their country's revenue. Consequently, importing food represents a favourable outcome for a nation's financial stability.

In conclusion, although food is available all over the world and people can buy from various markets, I firmly believe in purchasing food from a supermarket more because people can get nutritious food. Thus, they can get good food, which keeps their bodies healthy, and also help in maintaining national revenue by giving a specific amount of money to the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the availability of global food is a positive development. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health benefits and economic advantages. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding economic benefits is quite simplistic, focusing on basic retail markups rather than broader economic concepts like trade balance or market competition. While the response covers all parts of the task, the supporting arguments could be extended with more depth or nuanced examples to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the points made.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. There is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'Consequently' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'food' and 'buy'. The overall structure is coherent, but the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their opinions clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'import', 'retailers', 'revenue', and 'financial stability'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic terms like 'good food' and 'healthy food'. There are no significant spelling errors, but the lack of more precise or academic collocations prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more varied and sophisticated synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'Sellers import food at a cheap price and again sell it at a higher price' is a clear, error-free sentence. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to use repetitive sentence patterns. Punctuation is generally handled well. To achieve a higher score, the student should experiment with more varied subordinate clauses and advanced grammatical forms.
