Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, consumers all over the world can buy food products manufactured from distant and near countries from a supermarket. Overall, i personally think this was a positive development as it allows people to experience a major part of foreign cultures cost-effectively and in a short trip to the store instead of traveling abroad.

Not only is this development more economic, it is also environmentally friendly. It reduces the usage of one of the greatest greenhouse gas emitters, airplanes. By utilizing sea-travel with cargo, foreign products and culinary delicacies can be shipped cheaply and efficiently. Allowing numerous individuals and to enjoy foreign food. Furthermore, in the past, lower-class citizens virtually never had the chance of experiencing foreign dishes but having imported foods brought to supermarkets allows anyone with money to buy and enjoy new experiences.

However, this development does have a small negative impact. Introductions of foreign cultures and products can reduce cultural diversity and result in a reduction in traditional practices. This is due to the fact that more cost-effective and convenient alternatives can result in the extinction of old, traditional ones. For example, cheap and mouth-watering foreign products makes its competing food products less appealing and more likely to stay untouched. Making the traditional product less likely to be continued. However, this affect is sometimes minimal or rather beneficial because it introduces greater alternatives.

In conclusion, Although the appearance of foreign food products in supermarkets can risk cultural diversity. I believe it was a positive development overall as it decreases carbon emissions and allows for under-privileged individuals to taste foreign delicacies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. Your argument for the positive aspects of global food trade is well-supported by points regarding economic accessibility and environmental efficiency. The counter-argument regarding cultural diversity is also relevant, though it could be developed further with more specific examples. You successfully balanced the two sides of the argument, leading to a clear conclusion. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are fully explained; for instance, the link between sea-freight and reduced emissions is a strong point that could be elaborated upon to show a deeper understanding of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

Your essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'Allowing numerous individuals and to enjoy foreign food.' Improving the flow between sentences by avoiding fragments and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents will help your writing feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culinary delicacies', 'greenhouse gas emitters', and 'under-privileged'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'manufactured from' (food is usually 'produced' or 'sourced') and 'this affect' (should be 'this effect'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. To improve, focus on collocations—for example, instead of 'make its competing food products less appealing', consider 'undermine the competitiveness of local products'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as the misuse of 'i' (should be capitalized), the fragment mentioned earlier, and subject-verb agreement issues like 'cheap and mouth-watering foreign products makes'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where sentence boundaries are unclear. To achieve a higher band, focus on proofreading for basic errors and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with consistent grammatical accuracy.
