Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely recognized that supermarket has become an important part of modern society. People can easily buy fruits, fresh vegetables, meat, and other products that were produced far away. From my perspective, this is a positive development because it gives consumers more choices and improve the availability of food throughout the year.

One primary advantage is that people can enjoy greater variety of food. Many fruits and vegetables are seasonal in one country, but they can be imported from another country when they are not available locally. For example, supermarkets in India often sell apples from New Zealand and oranges from Australia, giving costomers more option than before. As a result, consumer can eat fresh food all year round.

Another benefit is that international trade supports both consumers and farmers. Customers can compare products from different nations and choose better quality or cheaper prices. At the same time, farmers and food companies can sell their products to global markets, which creates jobs and increases income. This also helps countries build stronger economic relationships through trade.

However, transporting food across long distances can increase pollution and the use of fuel. Imported products may also reduce demand for locally grown food, making it difficult for some local farmers to compete. Nevertheless, I believe these problem can be reduced by supporting local agriculture while importing products that are not easily produced at home.

To conclude, I firmly believe that selling food from all over the world in supermarkets is a positive development. It provides consumers with more choice, improves food availability, and supports international trade. Although there are environmental concerns, the overall benefits are greater than the disadvantages for most people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, providing a clear position that the development is positive. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, such as the mention of seasonal availability and economic benefits. The argument is extended logically, and the counter-argument regarding environmental impact is acknowledged and addressed, which demonstrates a balanced approach. The response is fully developed and maintains a consistent focus throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-argument is integrated more seamlessly into the overall argument rather than being presented as a separate paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as variety, economic benefits, and environmental concerns. Cohesive devices like 'One primary advantage', 'At the same time', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is some minor mechanical use of transitions, and the flow could be slightly more sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, justifying a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There are some good collocations like 'modern society', 'international trade', and 'global markets'. However, there are occasional errors in word choice and form, such as 'improve the availability' (should be 'improves') and 'costomers' (spelling error). The range is adequate for the task, but it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic control required for a higher band. The errors do not impede communication, which is consistent with a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'supermarket has become' (needs an article: 'the supermarket' or plural 'supermarkets'), 'consumer can eat' (should be plural 'consumers'), and 'these problem' (should be plural 'these problems'). These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score but do not impede the reader's understanding. The control of punctuation is generally good, and the overall structure is sound, warranting a Band 6.5.
