IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This is a global trend, where consumers go to the supermarket and buy food that is produced all over the world. Some people argue that there will be difficulties for small vendors as all the customers will go to the supermarket. While there is some validity to this statement, I think going to a supermarket to buy groceries is a positive development because of the accessibility of different goods in a single place and systematic collection of tax.
The government generates a lot of money from supermarkets, as everything can be tracked like sales, imports, exports, etc. This revenue will be used for the development of infrastructures. This will not be possible with small unregistered vendors. Similarly, there will be low risk of adulteration, as quality assurance will be implemented. For instance, it will be easier for the government in surveillance, testing, and validation of products in a single big place rather than numerous small shops.
Another positive development could be the accessibility of all goods in a single place. We can buy food that is cultivated in different parts of the world. Supermarkets import various groceries that cannot be handled by small vendors, as their connections and resources are limited. For example, we can easily find dragon fruits in supermarkets that are cultivated in the jungle of Thailand. This will let the customer taste varieties of non-native food and also preserve time.
In conclusion, while buying everything from the supermarket will hamper small vendors economically, it will help people and the government in the long term.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. The ideas regarding tax revenue, quality control, and consumer convenience are relevant and logically linked to the prompt. However, the development is somewhat brief. While the points are clear, they could be expanded with more depth or nuanced analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion acknowledges the counter-argument, which helps maintain a balanced perspective, but the overall development feels slightly thin for a 250-word essay, bordering on a list of points rather than a fully explored argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the idea of 'tax collection' and 'infrastructure' could be more explicitly linked to the prompt's focus on global food trade rather than just general supermarket operations.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'adulteration', 'quality assurance', and 'non-native'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and some word choices are slightly repetitive or basic (e.g., 'a lot of money', 'big place'). To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more sophisticated collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express ideas with more precision and less reliance on simple phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. There is good control over punctuation and basic syntax. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To improve, the student should incorporate a wider variety of subordinate clauses and more complex grammatical forms (such as passive voice or conditional structures) to demonstrate greater flexibility and control over the language.
