IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, in several nations, buyers can visit a grocery store and purchase food produced all over the globe. I firmly believe that this is a negative development. In this essay, I shall discuss the same.
Supermarkets now provide food items produced in various countries. Visiting stores in their hometown to access ingredients that are not produced in their own country allows individuals to curate authentic cuisines. They can also purchase exotic fruits which have different nutritional values compared to home grown ones, and add new flavours to their daily meals. As a result, people can enjoy a variety of food with a great mix of flavours.
On the contrary, some hold the opinion that it has a negative impact. If eatables from foreign countries are made available in supermarkets, it would create competition for the local goods. People influenced by food bloggers that usually promote global brands only, would be drawn to purchasing food produced globally. Consequently, it would affect local businesses and reduce their sale. Futhermore, imported food has a lot of import taxes levied on it, which makes it inaccessible to the low earning strata of public. This creates a disparity between the social classes and reinforces the socio-economic gap.
In my opinion, although buying food produced worldwide has a special appeal to consumers, we can not overlook how it affects the local vegetable and fruit markets. People may get attracted by the new delicacies available in supermarkets and they would stop buying from traditional markets leading to local vendors losing their livelihood and would no longer be able to support their families financially. Such a situation would only increase the poverty in developing countries.
To recapitulate, buying fancy globally produced food seems to have its benefits but its demerits outweigh the merits. Especially, how it impacts the local markets and increases social and economic differences can not be overlooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all parts of the task and maintained a clear position throughout. You successfully identified both the benefits and drawbacks of global food availability, ultimately arguing that the negative impacts on local markets are more significant. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly the discussion on socio-economic disparities and the impact on local vendors. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are balanced more effectively; currently, the second paragraph (the counter-argument) is quite strong, while your own position could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis of the 'negative development' aspect.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the contrary', 'Consequently', and 'To recapitulate' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved for better flow. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that ideas within paragraphs are more tightly linked would enhance the overall coherence and cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'nutritional values', 'authentic cuisines', and 'socio-economic gap'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'low earning strata of public' (which is slightly awkward) and 'eatables' (which is less common in this context). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but some collocations could be more natural. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are consistently appropriate for a formal essay style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Futhermore' (spelling), 'people... would be drawn to purchasing' (tense consistency), and 'the low earning strata of public' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for minor slips in articles, subject-verb agreement, and spelling. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more conditional or passive constructions accurately, would also help boost your score.
