IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many people are accessing a wide variety of food from different parts of the world in supermarkets. I believe that this is a positive development because it provides greater convenience and variety for consumers and allows people to experience different cultures.

One major advantage of this development is that it provides greater convenience to consumers. People can find different types of food from different countries in a single supermarket instead of travelling to different restaurants or countries to experience them. This saves time and effort for consumers. Moreover, these local supermarkets offer a wide range of food, and people can choose these foods based on their choices and preferences. So, people can consume international food without visiting them. For instance, people in India can consume Italian Pasta, Japanese sushi, and Mexican noodles, which are readily available in supermarkets rather than visiting restaurants or different countries. Therefore, people can have access to a large variety of foods in local supermarkets instead of visiting restaurants or different countries.

Another significant benefit is that people experience and understand different cultures. Food is an important part of a country's culture, and trying traditional dishes can give people an idea about the eating habits and traditions of other societies. In addition, consumers may become interested in learning more about a particular country after experiencing its cuisine. For example, a person who tries Japanese sushi may become interested in Japanese culture and traditional cooking methods. Thus, the availability of foreign food can increase people's exposure to different cultures.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that the availability of food from around the world in supermarkets is a positive development. It makes shopping more convenient, provides consumers with greater variety, and gives them an opportunity to experience different cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating that the development is positive. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of Italian pasta and Japanese sushi in India. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, acknowledging potential drawbacks like environmental impacts or the decline of local produce would provide a more balanced and sophisticated discussion, which is expected at the higher levels of IELTS writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and ideas flow smoothly. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'In addition' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between the convenience argument and the cultural argument is somewhat standard. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure, which prevents the flow from feeling entirely natural or sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'convenience', 'preferences', 'traditional dishes', and 'exposure'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of precision and style. Some phrasing is a bit repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'different' and 'food'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and synonyms to avoid simple repetition and enhance the academic tone of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar does not impede communication. You show control over basic punctuation and verb tenses. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited; there is a reliance on 'People can...' or 'It makes...'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of subordinate clauses, passive voice constructions, or conditional sentences to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
