In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the modern world, people can easily buy food from different countries in supermarkets. This development has become common because of global trade and has attracted significant public attention. I believe that this is a positive development because it gives consumers more choices and allows them to experience different cultures.

To commence, one of the major benefits is that people can have more choices of food. In other words, supermarkets provide products from different countries, so customers can buy food according to their preferences. For example, people in India can easily purchase Italian pasta, Japanese noodles or Mexican food from large supermarkets. This is convenient for consumers because they do not have to travel to another country to try different types of food. Moreover, international food can make people's daily lives more interesting.

Furthermore, another advantage is that the availability of international food can promote cultural exchange and support businesses. When people try food from other countries, they can learn more about different cultures and traditions. In addition, supermarkets need to import products from other countries, which can increase international trade and create business opportunities for food producers. Therefore, this development can be beneficial for both consumers and businesses in the long term. Thus, it is beneficial for individuals and society in the long term.

In my opinion, the availability of food from around the world is a positive development. Although imported food can sometimes be more expensive than local products, the greater choice, convenience and cultural exchange make this trend beneficial for society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a definitive position that the availability of global food is a positive development. You provide relevant reasons, such as increased consumer choice and cultural exchange, and support these with clear examples like the availability of Italian and Japanese food in India. The ideas are well-developed and the position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by briefly acknowledging the potential environmental impact of food miles, which would demonstrate a more nuanced, critical evaluation of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To commence', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that you avoid minor repetition, such as the final sentence of the third paragraph, which repeats the sentiment of the previous sentence almost exactly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'global trade', 'cultural exchange', and 'business opportunities' are used accurately. You successfully convey your meaning without any significant errors. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions. For example, instead of 'make people's daily lives more interesting', you could use 'enrich the culinary experiences of individuals' or 'broaden the gastronomic horizons of consumers'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your writing shows a good control of grammar and punctuation. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'When people try food... they can learn...' and the concessive 'Although imported food can sometimes be...'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim to vary your sentence length and structure even further to demonstrate greater flexibility.
