In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent years, buying food from around the world in supermarkets has become an increasingly noticeable trend in many societies. Although this development may present certain challenges, I consider it to be an overall positive development because it exposes people to different cultures and provides them with a wider range of food choices.
The most significant advantage of purchasing international food from supermarkets is that it can help people learn about different cultures. This is primarily because trying food from different countries allows individuals to become familiar with their traditions and lifestyles. As a result, people can broaden their cultural knowledge and develop a greater appreciation of other societies. A clear example of this can be seen in large multicultural cities, where supermarkets often sell food from numerous countries, allowing residents to experience different cuisines without travelling abroad. Therefore, the availability of international food can have a particularly positive impact on cultural awareness.
Another important benefit is that consumers have a wider range of food choices. One reason for this is that supermarkets offer products from many different countries, giving shoppers more options according to their preferences and tastes. This means that people are not limited to locally produced food when deciding what to buy. For instance, someone visiting a supermarket may find Italian pasta, Indian spices, Japanese noodles and Mexican sauces alongside local products. Consequently, having greater variety can allow consumers to explore new flavours and enjoy a more diverse diet, further strengthening the case for selling international food in supermarkets.
In conclusion, although buying international food from supermarkets may have some drawbacks, I believe that it represents an overall positive development. The benefits it provides in terms of cultural awareness and greater food variety are likely to have a lasting positive impact on consumers and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. Each paragraph is dedicated to a distinct, relevant argument—cultural awareness and food variety—which are well-supported with logical explanations and concrete examples, such as the mention of specific international food items like 'Italian pasta' and 'Japanese noodles'. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of a Band 7 or 8. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points without introducing new information. The response is balanced and directly answers the question of whether the development is positive or negative.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. The writer makes effective use of cohesive devices such as 'The most significant advantage', 'Another important benefit', 'As a result', and 'Consequently'. These markers guide the reader through the argument without being repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The referencing is clear throughout, and the overall structure is coherent, meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the academic context. The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to express ideas with precision, such as 'multicultural cities', 'diverse diet', and 'cultural awareness'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a Band 8 or 9 response. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling, and the language used is natural and fits the topic well. The range is adequate to convey complex ideas without any ambiguity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional and causal clauses (e.g., 'Although this development may present... I consider it to be...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammatical structures are generally accurate, they are somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, the writer could incorporate a wider variety of more complex, nuanced sentence structures or inversion techniques. Nevertheless, the control of grammar is strong and does not impede communication.
