Student answer (Band 5.5)

In most of the countries, supermarkets are becoming a major source for the purchase of food items produced all over the world. I believe that this is a positive development and this essay justifies that opinion.

It was difficult to buy food items from different locations in the past. People used to visit organic farms to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs and meat. The shops for dry food items were at other places. Similarly, every category of nutrition had a different location due to which many people found it difficult to buy food items. However, the introduction of supermarkets has made this exhuasting task more easier and now people can comfortably buy any grocery in one place. It is also preferable by majority of buyers because this practice saves time and energy which can be utilized for any other errand. For instance, our gorcery shopping is the resposibility of my brother and he disliked it for a long time period. After each of his visit to market, he complained about wastage of time as he had to spend time buy different items from different shops; however, it is now comfortable for him to go for food purchase from a supermarket where he can buy every category with in minutes and spend the saved time for his study. Take another example, my friend is a very busy person as she is doing a full time job. She usually do food purchase by herself and the supermarkets has made it less tiring for her because she does not need to buy different items from separate shops.

The introduction of supermarkets do affect the earning of local vendors and farmers because they have to sell their produced products at less rate and the supermarkets sells them at high rates. The drawback of supermarkets is that they often sells things with high prices as compared to local market rates. Moreover, the organic items are not fresh sometimes.

In conclusion, athough this approach has some disadvantages, I believe that this development affects our lifestyle positively and it also promotes international food brands.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the development is positive. You provide relevant reasons, such as convenience and time-saving, and support these with personal examples. However, the development of the counter-argument regarding local vendors is somewhat superficial and lacks depth. While you acknowledge the negative impact on local farmers, the discussion is brief and does not fully explore the complexity of the issue. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are developed with equal weight and depth, providing more analytical insight rather than just listing points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'For instance', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the personal anecdotes and the broader economic impact is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'nutrition', 'errand', and 'local vendors'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'exhuasting task more easier' (should be 'more exhausting task easier') and 'do food purchase' (should be 'does her grocery shopping'). There are also some spelling errors like 'gorcery' and 'resposibility'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for basic spelling and word-form accuracy, as these minor errors occasionally distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'supermarkets has made' (should be 'have made'), 'supermarkets sells' (should be 'sell'), and 'she usually do' (should be 'does'). Additionally, there are errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'in most of the countries' (should be 'in most countries') and 'buy different items' (should be 'buying'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage.
