Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many areas of the world, it is a popular habit of individuals to buy groceries in a supermarket because there is a variety of international foods available there. I believe that it is a positive development because food plays a significant role in knowing any culture. Also, access to different kinds of food results in the availability of different options to have a balanced diet.

Firstly, every culture has different features which make it stand out among other cultures. Among these features, food plays a major role. Eating food of any culture, will let you understand the behaviors of its followers. People who are interested in any culture or tradition will go to that specific area to enjoy their food. However, availability of international cuisines in a supermarket allows people to try these traditional foods in their home. In this way, they will know about their specific customs and traditions. For example, people who are interested in a specific culture will definitely search for the availability of their cultural in their own supermarkets.

Although, choosing to eat a balanced diet looks an amazing decision. But, it requires a lot of efforts to follow this diet because there are not enough options to choose on daily basis. People often get bored of same kind of meals daily. However, access to a variety of international food in a local market will increase the options of healthy meals. People can try different healthy cuisines and add these in their daily diet food. For instance, many international fruits and vegetables are available locally which people are including in their meal as a healthy option.

Nowadays, access to different types of international cuisines in a local market proves beneficial for people because it helps them in knowing different traditions of the world. Also, it gives them a lot of healthy options to eat.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a positive position. The two main arguments—cultural understanding and nutritional variety—are relevant and logically linked to the topic. However, the development is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument about cultural understanding is restated in the conclusion without adding new depth. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements. For example, instead of saying 'people will know about their customs,' you could explain how access to specific ingredients like spices or grains allows for the authentic preparation of traditional dishes, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation for foreign cultures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'However,' and 'For instance' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as starting a sentence with 'Although' followed by a fragment ('Although, choosing to eat a balanced diet looks an amazing decision. But, it requires...'). Improving the flow between sentences by avoiding such fragments and ensuring that cohesive devices are integrated more naturally into the sentence structure would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'international cuisines,' 'balanced diet,' and 'traditions.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, and there are instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'diet food' or 'knowing any culture.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. For example, instead of 'knowing any culture,' you could use 'gaining cultural insight' or 'fostering cross-cultural appreciation.' Expanding your range of synonyms for common words like 'food' or 'options' will also help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the same kind of meals'), punctuation (unnecessary commas after 'Although' or 'However'), and sentence fragments. For example, 'Although, choosing to eat a balanced diet looks an amazing decision' is grammatically incorrect as it stands alone. To improve, focus on mastering the use of complex sentences and ensuring that your punctuation supports the structure of your arguments rather than interrupting them. Proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will also help reduce the frequency of these errors.
