Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, consumers can travel to different markets and buy food products that were produced from all over the world, which I believe is a negative development.

The idea of going to a supermarket just to buy food which was produced from different parts of the world is not very practical and wise decision. By just traveling to the supermarket, time, effort and fuel is consumed, resulting to a tiresome trip and not conserving the use of oil which is known to be very expensive these days. In addition, products in the supermarket are far more expensive than in normal store or public markets, because they were transported from different locations and price escalation is implied. People should consider more on supporting local products, such as buying in public markets where cheap items can be purchased, and also bargain to some vendors. Local stores also sell food products that are fresh and healthier because no preservatives and chemicals are used to prolong the shelf life of every item.

Product exportation can increase the profits of every supermarket. For instance, these days a lot of international cuisine are successfully introduced to the taste of local community, where in fact is a trend and are purchase more than the local products. Therefore, more products are exported in the country, rather than transporting them internationally. That could be a good solution to help the economy.

In conclusion, international food products introduces new taste to locals, however it is far more expensive, which I believe is a negative development. Nevertheless, people should consider supporting local products more since they are healthier.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the global availability of food. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. The first body paragraph focuses on the inconvenience and cost of supermarkets, which is a relevant point, but the second body paragraph seems to contradict the initial stance by discussing the benefits of international cuisine and economic solutions. This creates a lack of focus in the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that all supporting points directly reinforce your stated position throughout the essay rather than introducing conflicting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the logical flow between the second and third paragraphs is weak because the third paragraph introduces a counter-argument that is not effectively integrated into the overall thesis. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the ideas could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'price escalation' and 'prolong the shelf life'. However, there are also some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'not conserving the use of oil' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'where in fact is a trend'. The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'resulting to a tiresome trip' (should be 'resulting in'), 'no preservatives and chemicals are used' (missing 'are' or 'have'), and 'international food products introduces' (subject-verb agreement error). These errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions after specific verbs.
