Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent years, buying food from around the world in supermarkets has become an increasingly noticeable trend in many societies. Although this development may present certain challenges, I consider it to be an overall positive development because it exposes people to different cultures and provides them with a wider range of food choices.
The most significant advantage of purchasing international food from supermarkets is that it can help people learn about different cultures. This is primarily because trying food from different countries allows individuals to become familiar with their traditions and lifestyles. As a result, people can broaden their cultural knowledge and develop a greater appreciation of other societies. A clear example of this can be seen in large multicultural cities, where supermarkets often sell food from numerous countries, allowing residents to experience different cuisines without travelling abroad. Therefore, the availability of international food can have a particularly positive impact on cultural awareness.
Another important benefit is that consumers have a wider range of food choices. One reason for this is that supermarkets offer products from many different countries, giving shoppers more options according to their preferences and tastes. This means that people are not limited to locally produced food when deciding what to buy. For instance, someone visiting a supermarket may find Italian pasta, Indian spices, Japanese noodles and Mexican sauces alongside local products. Consequently, having greater variety can allow consumers to explore new flavours and enjoy a more diverse diet, further strengthening the case for selling international food in supermarkets.
In conclusion, although buying international food from supermarkets may have some drawbacks, I believe that it represents an overall positive development. The benefits it provides in terms of cultural awareness and greater food variety are likely to have a lasting positive impact on consumers and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct argument—cultural awareness and food variety—supported by relevant examples such as the mention of specific cuisines like Italian pasta and Japanese noodles. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance. To reach a higher band, you could briefly acknowledge the potential negative impacts (such as environmental concerns or local economic strain) in more detail to provide a more balanced, nuanced discussion before refuting them, which would demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'The most significant advantage', 'Another important benefit', and 'Consequently', which guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural. The structure is consistent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'increasingly noticeable trend', 'broaden their cultural knowledge', and 'diverse diet' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and conveys your meaning clearly, it is largely functional. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations that show a deeper command of the language. For example, instead of 'provide', you might use 'facilitate' or 'grant access to'. Overall, the vocabulary is error-free and fits the academic context well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Although' clauses and 'This is primarily because' constructions. The grammar is highly accurate, with almost no errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, or punctuation. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a hallmark of a strong performance. The control over complex structures is consistent throughout the piece. To move toward a band 9, ensure that your sentence variety is even more diverse, perhaps by experimenting with more advanced inversion or conditional structures, though your current level is already very strong.
