Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is increasingly common for costumer can go to a grocery store and purchase common goods that are made by all over the world. Although this development has some drawbacks, I believe it is largely a positive development because it gives consumers more choices and allows them to experience different cultures through food.

One major advantage is that international food provides consumers with a wider range of choices. People are no longer limited to food produced in their own country, and they can buy products that may not be available locally. For example, supermarkets in the Philippines sell products from countries such as Japan, Korea, Thailand and the United States. This allows consumers to choose food according to their preferences and try new products without travelling abroad.

Another benefit is that imported food can increase people's knowledge of other cultures. Food is an important part of culture, so trying dishes from other countries can help people become more familiar with different traditions and lifestyles. For instance, someone who regularly eats Japanese or Thai food may become interested in the culture and eventually want to learn more about those countries. This can encourage greater cultural awareness and international understanding.

However, this development can also have some disadvantages. Imported food can sometimes be more expensive because of transportation and import costs. In addition, buying large amounts of imported food may increase competition for local producers. Nevertheless, I believe these disadvantages are less significant than the benefits because consumers can still choose locally produced products while having access to international alternatives.

In conclusion, although the availability of food from around the world can create some disadvantages, I believe it is mainly a positive development. It gives consumers greater choice and provides opportunities to experience and understand different cultures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. The introduction states the writer's stance, and the body paragraphs provide relevant supporting arguments for both the benefits and drawbacks. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the point regarding cultural awareness. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument. To reach a higher band, the writer could provide more nuanced analysis of the 'negative' side, as the current treatment is slightly brief compared to the advantages. However, the response is well-focused and fully satisfies the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the benefits and the counter-argument is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Another benefit', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. The writer uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'imported food', 'international alternatives', and 'cultural awareness'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the 'less common' or 'idiomatic' items that would characterize a higher band score. There is a minor error in the opening sentence ('costumer' instead of 'consumers'), but this does not impede communication. The range is adequate to convey the intended meaning with precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. There is a minor grammatical slip in the first sentence ('It is increasingly common for costumer can go...'), which should be 'It is increasingly common for consumers to go...'. Despite this, the majority of the writing is accurate. The use of punctuation is correct, and the complexity of the sentences is sufficient to support the arguments clearly. The errors present are non-systematic and do not interfere with the reader's understanding.
