Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by identifying the development as positive, citing convenience and product availability as reasons. However, the development of these ideas is quite superficial. For instance, the point about immigrants finding products from their home countries is mentioned but not expanded upon with depth. The explanation of 'fixed prices' and 'lucky draws' is somewhat repetitive and lacks a sophisticated analysis of the broader economic or social implications of globalized food supply chains. The response stays on topic, but the arguments remain at a basic level, failing to fully explore the complexities of the issue as required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical and disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, such as the abrupt transition in the second paragraph starting with 'The other most benefit'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive sentence structures. While there is an attempt at an introduction and conclusion, the internal structure of the body paragraphs lacks the necessary linking phrases to guide the reader smoothly through the argument. The paragraphing is present but does not always effectively group related ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'good', 'many', and 'things'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'start reasoning about price' (likely meaning 'bargaining') and 'finically unstable' (likely meaning 'financially'). The range is insufficient to express complex ideas with precision. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the presence of errors in basic terminology prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The student struggles to use less common lexical items effectively, often resulting in awkward phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'each country have'), missing articles, incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'they are find'), and punctuation errors. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, which causes difficulty for the reader. The high frequency of errors in basic grammar—such as tense usage and sentence construction—significantly impacts the clarity of the writing. To improve, the student needs to focus on mastering basic sentence patterns before attempting more complex structures.
