Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many nations, retailers could go to a supermarket and purchase food manufactured globally. This is a positive development because it boosts the country's economy and expands businesses.

First and foremost, many individuals can have access to variety of food produce regardless of where they are located. The reason is that globalization has made some food accessible through the efficient transport system. For example, many individuals in cities like Lagos, Nigeria may eat foods produced in India due to the availability of such foods globally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits your ability to develop your ideas. While you state a clear position that the development is positive, the arguments are underdeveloped. You mention economic benefits and variety but fail to elaborate on these points with sufficient depth or supporting evidence. To improve, you must expand your arguments by explaining the 'why' and 'how' behind your claims and providing more detailed examples. Because the response is only 85 words, it fails to address all parts of the task in a fully developed manner, resulting in a low score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows a basic attempt at organization, using a transition phrase 'First and foremost' to introduce a point. However, due to the extremely short length, there is no real progression of ideas or a conclusion. The paragraphing is insufficient, and the logical flow is interrupted by the abrupt ending. To achieve a higher band, you need to structure your essay with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs that each focus on a single main idea, and a concluding summary. Using a wider range of cohesive devices, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in contrast,' would help connect your sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is generally clear and appropriate for the topic, using terms like 'globalization,' 'efficient,' and 'manufactured.' However, the range is quite limited due to the brevity of the text. There is a minor collocation error in the first sentence: 'retailers could go to a supermarket' is inaccurate, as retailers are the ones selling, not the ones shopping. You should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to international trade, consumerism, and economic impact to demonstrate a wider lexical range. Focus on using more precise adjectives and nouns to convey your ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The grammar is generally accurate, and your sentences are easy to follow. You demonstrate control over simple and some complex structures, such as the use of 'due to' and 'regardless of.' However, the limited length means you have not demonstrated a wide range of complex grammatical structures. There are no major errors that impede communication, but the lack of variety in sentence length and structure keeps the score in the mid-range. To improve, try to incorporate more varied sentence patterns, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to show greater grammatical flexibility.
