In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many nations, consumers could go to a supermarket and purchase foods manufactured globally. I believe this is a negative development because of the pollution from transport systems and loss of local food value.

First and foremost, globalization has made it easy for people to have access to a variety of food regardless of their location. However, this also poses significant threats to the environment because most of the transportation systems used to transport food use fossil fuels. A good example of this is the airplanes which are mostly used to import foreign foods such as kiwi fruit grown in Australia. These modes of transportation releases carbon dioxide which are harmful to both the environment and plant and animal species. When greenhouse gas emissions are released in the atmosphere, it does not only lead to environmental degradation, but it also affects the ecosystem. As a result, this may lead to global warming and extreme weather conditions.

Furthermore, when many people prefer to eat only imported foods, it affects the local foods produced by farmers. The reason is that most people like to try out new things, and for that reason they may abandon the local foods produced in their countries. For example, in many cities like Lagos, Nigeria, there may be a high demand of foreign vegetables such as pumpkin leaf and lettuces, due to the fact that it is readily available in most supermarkets. These causes lose of local food value because few people are likely to have interest in traditional dishes which means farmers may lose interest in growing traditional foods due to low demands from the masses. Consequently, this may lead to decline of traditional foods as cultural identity.

In conclusion, in many country, consumers could buy foods produced all over the world. I believe this is negative development because it could cause pollution and loss of food value.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a negative position and providing two main supporting arguments: environmental impact and the erosion of local food culture. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the development of the second point is slightly weakened by the example provided; pumpkin leaves and lettuce are often grown locally in Nigeria, which makes the argument about them being exclusively 'foreign' slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that examples are logically sound and directly support the specific claim being made. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph could be more precise to ensure the link between foreign food demand and the loss of cultural identity is more tightly connected.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'globalization', 'environmental degradation', and 'cultural identity'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'manufactured globally' (food is usually 'produced' or 'grown') and 'these causes lose of local food value' (should be 'this causes a loss of'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('these modes... releases', 'these causes lose') and article usage ('in many country'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic agreement and pluralization errors. The use of complex sentences is present, but the accuracy of these structures needs to be more consistent to achieve a higher band score.
