Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many parts of the world today, food imported from different countries can now be purchased from supermarkets. I believe that this is a positive development because it allows local residents to try foreign produce without the need to travel and it may also support the economic growth of the countries.

One of the benefits of importing products from different countries and offering them in the supermarkets is that people will be able to try them without the need to travel. One way to experience the culture of another country is through food. If it can be exported to another country and let foreigners try their local food, then they can already introduce their products and a little bit about their culture to others. For instance, delicacies from neighboring countries like Thailand and Korea are now available in the Philippines. Filipinos can now try their food without the need of spending money on flights and accommodation.

Another advantage of making foreign food products available locally is it can help in the growth of the economy for both countries. Nations exporting the products will help provide more jobs to their citizens as the demand for their goods are increasing globally. For example, local farmers in a country benefit when there is a high demand to export their products. Similarly, the local society also benefit when citizens purchase food and help businesses earn profit.

In conclusion, making foreign food available in the supermarkets will benefit not only the foreign countries but also the citizens of the local country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly, taking a positive stance and providing two main supporting arguments: cultural exchange and economic growth. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the development is somewhat basic; for example, the explanation of economic growth could be more nuanced by discussing the environmental impact or the potential negative effects on local small-scale farmers, which would have provided a more balanced and sophisticated perspective. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Another advantage', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly repetitive in structure, and some transitions could be more varied to improve the overall sophistication of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'foreign produce', 'delicacies', and 'economic growth'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'help in the growth of the economy', phrases like 'stimulate economic development' or 'bolster international trade' would be more impactful.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the demand for their goods are increasing' (should be 'is') and 'local society also benefit' (should be 'benefits'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The student shows a reasonable command of sentence construction, but a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice constructions used more naturally, would enhance the grammatical range.
