Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, consumers usually have purchased the food which imported from the different countries. For many people, it is most convenient way to have exotic fruits and vegetables, but it also contain chemicals to improve the shelf life of fruits. However, there are both pros and cons to this decision. In this essay, I will discuss some of the reasons why citizens prefer to explore new food from other countries and some of the challenges to be overcome.

Lets begin by looking at the advantages of purchasing exotic food. One of the main compelling argument is that, people can taste and explore new fruits and vegetables from other countries, which can't grow in their own country due to different climatic conditions, even without spending money on travel. For instance, Avocado fruit plant has numerous benefits but it could not cultivate in the South Asian conditions due to excessive humidity. So, its better to import such type of fruits.

Secondly, the supermarkets management has a direct contract with suppliers of exotic food, so supermarket purchase directly a good amount of food. This means imported food are more accessible. And due to the competition with their competitors, supermarkets usually sell imported fruits on economical prices, which eventually benefit customers.

Turning to the other side of argument, such imported fruits contain different chemicals to increase their shelf life. For example, usually bananas, strawberries and other fruits are coated with artificial plant hormones such as zeatin, ABA acid. Therefore, consuming fruits with such chemicals, ultimately have adverse effects on individual's health.

All things considered, the benefits and challenges. You need to weigh up the pros of accessibility of exotic fruits in local supermarkets and cons of chemical coated fruits. Personally, I believe that benefits in terms of availability of imported fruits in local market outweigh any negatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing both advantages and disadvantages of global food trade. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout, concluding with a summary of the writer's stance. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of climatic diversity and the concerns regarding chemical preservatives. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the argument regarding supermarket contracts is a bit underdeveloped and could have been linked more clearly to the overall theme of global food accessibility. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance,' 'Secondly,' and 'Turning to the other side of argument,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'to this decision' in the introduction, which does not clearly refer to a preceding noun. Despite these minor flaws, the paragraphing is appropriate and the overall structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'climatic conditions,' 'excessive humidity,' and 'artificial plant hormones.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'most convenient way' (should be 'the most convenient way'), 'compelling argument is that, people' (unnecessary comma), and 'economical prices' (should be 'affordable' or 'competitive prices'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. A wider range of less common vocabulary would also be beneficial to demonstrate more sophisticated control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'consumers usually have purchased' (should be 'usually purchase'), 'it also contain' (should be 'contains'), and 'its better' (should be 'it is better'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'supermarkets management' (should be 'supermarket management'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, as well as attempting more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
