Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, supermarkets offer a wide variety of food products imported from different parts of the world. Although this development has some drawbacks, I believe that it is largely a positive trend because it provide people with great choices and access to food throughout the year.
This essay will discuss both views.
Wide variety of food products imported all over the world has many advantages. Firstly, it provide people with greater variety of food. People can eat according to wishes and can try food from other cultures and countries. secondly, it provide us with all round accessibility. For instance, fruits such as apples, cherries or oranges can be imported from other countries when they are out of season locally.
In addition, it allows cultural exposure, consumers can try international dishes without travelling to other countries. Importing food also have some effects on economy. It creates jobs in transportation, retail, agriculture, and food processing. It also encourages competition as imported foods can push local products to improve quality and price.
Admittedly, imported food also have some drawbacks, such as it is harm to local farmers because cheap imported food reduce the demand for locally produced goods. It can also damage our environment as food transported from long distance causes increased carbon emission. In addition, loss of traditional diets may increase. People may gradually replace local foods with international products .For example, younger generations may increasingly choose international fast food instead of traditional dishes, gradually reducing interest in their local culinary traditions. Moreover, food safety concern may increase as long-distance transportation and storage can affect freshness and quality. However, its advantages outweigh disadvantages.
Conclusively, imported food can provides multiple choices and exposure to different cultures but there are also some drawbacks but I believe that advantages are more in number than its disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the trend is positive. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the availability of out-of-season fruits and the economic impact of global trade. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial; for instance, the discussion on economic effects and environmental concerns could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The structure is logical, though the introduction mentions discussing 'both views' while the prompt asks for an opinion on whether it is a positive or negative development, which is a slight misalignment in approach.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'secondly', 'In addition', and 'Conclusively', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is generally appropriate, though the transition between the advantages and disadvantages could be smoother to improve the overall flow. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, restating points already made without adding a final synthesis of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'culinary traditions', 'carbon emission', and 'accessibility'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or minor errors, such as 'it provide' (subject-verb agreement) and 'it is harm to' (incorrect word form). To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it provide', 'imported food also have', 'imported food can provides'). These errors are persistent throughout the text. While the student attempts complex sentences, the control over these structures is inconsistent. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in spacing and comma usage that detract from the overall professional quality of the writing.
