Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the past, people only ate local food, but now due to globalization, food from every country is available everywhere. In my opinion, this is mostly positive development.

On the one hand, there are some advantages of this topic. To begin with, due to the globalization, food from every country is available everywhere. Moreover, Indians can also get Pasta, Kiwi, Avocado, these fast food and fruits are produced in other countries. However, the availability of every food throughout the year. For example we can get summer fruits in winter and winter fruits in summer. Furthermore, due to this, farmers from other countries get benefits. They get an international market.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of this topic. Firstly, due to globalization, loss to local farmers because imported cheap food makes local food seem expensive. Secondly, there are some environmental damages due to globalization because when food is transferred from one country to another country then food boxes loaded in ships or planes and they produce the pollution. Lastly, the food supply from one country to another are not fresh . Some chemicals are used to preserve food for long journey. Therefore, these chemicals harm to our health. So, these are some negative effects of buy food produced all over the world.

To conclude, there are some disadvantages, but the advantages are more. Therefore, it is overall a positive development. In addition, this global food trade promotes cultural exchange and economic growth, which clearly outweigh its minor drawbacks for both consumers and producers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits for farmers and the environmental impact of transportation. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'chemicals' is mentioned but not fully explained or supported with specific evidence. The essay covers both sides of the argument, but the explanation of the advantages and disadvantages remains at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or specific examples to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For example, the phrase 'due to globalization' is used multiple times in close proximity, which affects the flow. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack smooth transitions, such as the sentence starting with 'However, the availability of every food throughout the year.' Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence connects logically to the next will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'globalization', 'international market', and 'environmental damages'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'loss to local farmers' instead of 'a loss for local farmers' and 'food boxes loaded in ships' instead of 'food transported via ships'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations to demonstrate a wider range and better control over word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles, prepositions, and verb forms. For example, 'these fast food and fruits are produced' should be 'these fast foods and fruits are produced', and 'these chemicals harm to our health' should be 'these chemicals harm our health'. There are also issues with sentence fragments and punctuation. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
