Student answer (Band 6.5)
In many countries, consumers can go to a supermarket and purchase food produced throughout the world these days. In my opinion, this is a positive development because it gives individuals the opportunity to purchase food produced in different countries without having to travel abroad, while also reducing the transportation costs involved in obtaining such products.
One major advantage is that supermarkets offer consumers a much wider variety of food. They can easily access food from a wide range of cuisine in the country where they live. Some people may not like foreign food, so the availability of local products facilitates access to food from their own country. Moreover, some individuals have specific dietary requirements, and supermarkets provide suitable international food options, allowing them to easily choose food that meets their needs. For example, Muslims avoid foods that are considered haram and therefore require halal options. The availability of international food allows them to access a wider selection of halal products from different countries, making it easier for them to choose food that meets their dietary requirements.
Another benefit is that consumers do not have to travel to different nations to get products originating from those places. Instead, they can buy these items from local supermarkets in their area. This enables them to avoid the transportation expenses they would otherwise have to pay when travelling abroad to purchase such products. As a result, people can enjoy products from other countries without spending extra money or time on travelling abroad. For example, a person who wants to try Japanese food can simply buy it from a local supermarket instead of travelling to Japan. Therefore, they can use the money they save on transportation to fulfil their other needs.
In conclusion, I believe that this development is beneficial because it provides people with a greater variety of choices and allows them to access goods from around the world more easily and affordably.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a positive position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of halal dietary requirements and the comparison of buying Japanese food locally versus traveling. The development is logical and consistent. To reach a higher band, the response could benefit from a more nuanced discussion, perhaps acknowledging potential drawbacks (such as environmental impact or the decline of local agriculture) to provide a more balanced and sophisticated argument, even while maintaining the positive stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Moreover', 'Another benefit', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The flow of information is natural, and the structure supports the overall argument well. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive usage, and the essay maintains a coherent structure from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'dietary requirements', 'transportation expenses', and 'halal options'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items that would distinguish a higher band score. The word choices are generally standard and functional. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to demonstrate greater flexibility and precision in their expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. There is a consistent use of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('instead of travelling to Japan') and relative clauses. While the grammar is accurate, the range of structures is somewhat limited; the essay relies on a fairly predictable sentence pattern. To achieve a higher band, the student should experiment with more varied sentence types, such as inversion or more sophisticated passive constructions, while maintaining the current high level of accuracy.
