Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the availability of global food is a positive development. The ideas are relevant, focusing on cultural exchange, affordability, and culinary creativity. However, the development of these points is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument regarding 'removing hostility' is an interesting point but remains underdeveloped and slightly abstract. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples or elaborate on the logical connection between global food trade and specific societal benefits. The response covers all parts of the task, but the supporting arguments could be more nuanced and better structured to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'positive development' is used in both the introduction and conclusion, and the transitions between sentences could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to avoid repetitive sentence structures. The overall flow is clear, but it lacks the sophisticated, unobtrusive linking characteristic of higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'geographical benefit' and 'export'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'convenance' (spelling error) and 'by' instead of 'buy'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common words. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. While the errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band, which requires a more flexible and precise use of lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('a lot of people doesn't have') and awkward phrasing ('left a lasting positive impression' should be 'leaves'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While you attempt complex sentences, the control over them is not always consistent. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate more accurate control over a wider range of grammatical structures and reduce the frequency of basic errors in tense and agreement.
