Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable fact that with the advancement of technology it has become easier for manufacturing companies to produce different variety of goods and bring it to the local supermarkets. Nowadays, consumers are opting to go to the supermarkets and purchasing food produced all around the globe. I believe it is a positive development because it gives consumers the convenience of buying food from different countries by just visiting their local supermarkets.

To begin with, as technology is evolving it gives people luxury to explore different trends and popular food all around the world. With the growing interest of people in international goods, industries are taking initiatives for importing the international goods and bringing it to various local supermarkets. For instance, young kids using social media are more inclined to come across content related to food and candies and they might want to try different foreign candies, and because these foreign goods are available in the local supermarkets it becomes easier for parents to fullfill their children's wants.

Moreover, supermarkets including international goods for consumers to purchase it increases their marketing and overall profit and revenue of the supermarket because of the available diversity of goods in the shops. For example, in the USA, sushi is a common high quality food many people like to eat. If a person wants to try to make sushi at home then it will be extremely helping if the key ingredients like sticky rice, seaweed, etc which are sometime difficult to find, are available in the local supermarkets. In addition to this, the advancement of countries including produce from all around the world in their super markets is extremely beneficial to maintain the relationship with foreign countries in the food sectors and increase their profits.

In Conclusion, due to the growing trend and culture, mainly in food, people are eager to try different food without having to travel miles from their homes, and as supermarkets try to include more international foods in their stores, it becomes easier for consumer to go to their local supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, taking a positive stance throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the convenience for consumers and the economic benefits for supermarkets. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument about 'convenience' in the introduction is echoed in the conclusion without adding new depth. The example regarding sushi is a good, concrete illustration, but the explanation of international relations in the food sector is a bit vague and could have been better linked to the consumer experience. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point rather than restating the general premise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to signal the structure. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'the advancement of countries including produce' is slightly awkward and impacts the clarity of the connection between ideas. Overall, the essay maintains a coherent structure, though the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'importing', 'diversity of goods', and 'revenue'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'it will be extremely helping' (should be 'helpful') and 'fullfill their children's wants' (should be 'fulfill their children's needs'). The range is sufficient for the task, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score. Improving the variety of verbs and adjectives would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'produce different variety of goods' should be 'a different variety of goods' or 'different varieties of goods'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'in the super markets' (should be 'in supermarkets'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A more careful proofreading process would help to eliminate these minor slips.
