Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is commonly believed that in many countries currently, customers can go to a supermarket and purchase food produced all over the word. Although this initiative can be beneficial and convenient for consumers, I believe that this is a negative development. The main reason is that the environment can be polluted in this way and these products can be too expensive.

At the outset, in the present day, consumers can get all kinds of food anywhere in the world. However, the environment can also be polluted in this prospect. This is because a vast quantity of food comes to certain country through the transportation by sea. For instance, in our country Pakistan, mangoes are being exported worldwide while transporting through cruise ships. Therefore, a lot of fuel used by these ships, and the combustion of fuel usually results in global warming which pollutes the environment. Consequently, severe kinds of diseases can be discovered due to the contamination in the air.

Besides that, the costs of these products can not be justifiable. In other words, companies have to pay frete of transportation, which are too high. Furthermore, a high amount of taxes also have to be paid for clearance of these products once they reached in the consigned country. So, the prices of these food becomes almost double when they are going to be sold in the receiver country. For example, sports good items which are manufactured in Pakistan have been exported to the UK, while the price of that products almost tripled when they will be sold because of too many taxes imposed on the imported products.

To conclude, although it can be convenient for consumers to buy any kind of food while going to the supermarket, I firmly believe this can create harmful effects as the environment will be polluted somehow and customers will be paying too high for that particular product.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the global food trade is a negative development. The main arguments—environmental impact and increased costs—are relevant and supported with examples. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding 'sports good items' is not directly related to the topic of food, which weakens the coherence of the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that all examples are strictly relevant to the specific subject matter of the prompt and provide more depth in the analysis of the environmental consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'At the outset', 'Consequently', and 'In other words' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, the shift from discussing food to discussing 'sports good items' creates a disconnect in the logical flow of the second body paragraph. Improving the transition between ideas and ensuring consistent subject matter within paragraphs would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'consigned' and 'combustion', which is positive. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and spelling errors, such as 'frete' (freight) and 'word' instead of 'world'. The phrase 'in this prospect' is also used incorrectly. To improve, focus on mastering collocations and ensuring that vocabulary is used in the correct context to avoid minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'a lot of fuel used by these ships' (missing auxiliary verb) and 'the prices of these food becomes' (subject-verb agreement). There are also issues with article usage and tense consistency, such as 'when they will be sold'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching the 7.0 band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
