Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing whether the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development, stating a clear position that it is positive. However, the essay is incomplete, abruptly cutting off mid-sentence at the end of the second body paragraph, and it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at only 177 words. Due to this significant under-length and the incomplete development of ideas and conclusions, the task cannot be fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text shows some basic organizational structure with an introduction and two body paragraphs, though the second body paragraph trails off incomplete. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In other words', and 'For instance' are used, but their application is at times mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, but the lack of a concluding paragraph and the truncated ending detract from the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication, featuring some topic-related terms such as 'globalisation', 'cuisines', and 'accessibility'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'postive' instead of 'positive', 'availabe' instead of 'available', and factual or collocational slips like 'ramen from china' (ramen is Japanese). The range of vocabulary remains limited and repetitive throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors, including missing articles and pluralisation issues ('other country', 'spices adn some other items', 'residing in abroad'). Additionally, sentence boundaries and word forms show frequent lapses. Because the essay is truncated, the range of grammatical structures demonstrated is very limited.
