Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, people in many countries can easily buy food from supermarket that is produced in different parts of the world. From my perspective, this is a constructive evolution.
One of the most convincing reasons behind my view is that consumers have a wider variety of food choices. Moreover, supermarkets can sell products from different countries, so people are able to try new types of food without travelling abroad. For example, Indian supermarkets may sell Italian pasta, Japanese sauces and Australian fruits. This is particularly beneficial for people who enjoy different cuisines or have specific dietary requirements.
Not only this, international food trade can provide better availability and sometimes lower prices. When a particular food is not produced locally, supermarkets can import it from another country. As a result, customers can buy seasonal products throughout the year. For instance, supermarkets in India can sell apples, berries and other fruits that are not easily available during certain seasons. Furthermore, competition between local and international suppliers may encourage businesses to offer reasonable prices and improve the quality of their products.
On the other hand, some people think that buying large amounts of imported food may negatively affect local farmers and producers, because they have to compete with products from other countries. In addition, transporting food over long distances can increase fuel consumption and environmental pollution. Nevertheless, I believe that countries continue to support local farmers and encourage environmentally friendly transportation.
To conclude, buying food from different parts of the world gives consumers greater choice, convenience and year-round availability. Although it may create difficulties for local producers and contribute to environmental problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task effectively, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The essay is presented as a constructive evolution, and the writer explores both the advantages of global food trade, such as variety, availability, and lower prices, and acknowledges the counter-arguments regarding local farmers and environmental concerns. Ideas are generally well-supported with relevant examples, such as Indian supermarkets selling Italian pasta and seasonal fruits. However, the conclusion is grammatically incomplete and trails off into a fragment, which slightly detracts from the full development of the final thought. Despite this minor issue, the response satisfies the requirements well, aligning closely with Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction to supporting body paragraphs that outline benefits and counter-arguments, and finally concluding. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Not only this', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas together. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. Referencing is generally clear, though the concluding sentence lacks a main clause to connect the concessive clause, causing a slight disruption in flow. Overall, the structural framework demonstrates good management of cohesion and logical sequencing, matching Band 7 criteria.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'constructive evolution', 'specific dietary requirements', and 'environmental pollution' show an ability to use less common lexical items with an awareness of style and collocation. There are minor slips in word choice or collocation, such as 'buy food from supermarket' missing a plural or article, but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings and arguments, which places this performance firmly at Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over sentence structures. Examples of complex structures include 'When a particular food is not produced locally, supermarkets can import it from another country.' There are frequent error-free sentences, though a few errors persist, notably the incomplete sentence structure in the final paragraph ('Although it may create difficulties for local producers and contribute to environmental problems'), which functions as a fragment rather than a complete thought. Punctuation and grammar are otherwise well-controlled, supporting clear communication and fitting the Band 6.5 to 7 profile; awarded a solid 6.5 due to the grammatical incompleteness at the very end.
