Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of consumers being able to buy food produced all over the world, adopting a somewhat balanced overview. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas lack full development; for example, the introduction promises a discussion on food productivity, which is slightly imprecise, and the body paragraphs touch on several points without fully extending all of them. Concepts such as carbon emissions and economic disruption are mentioned, but could be supported with more robust explanations. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of Task 2 by exploring multiple facets of globalized food markets, aligning well with a Band 6.0 profile.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate advantages and disadvantages. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The student relies on repetitive transition phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Nevertheless', and there are frequent punctuation and spacing issues around commas and full stops (e.g., 'Undoubtedly , food', 'For instance ,'). Referencing and transitions between sentences can occasionally feel disjointed, such as moving abruptly from the avocado example to cultural learning. These features place the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'predominant', 'carbon emissions', and 'economic growth'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'Thesedays' instead of 'These days', 'myraid' instead of 'myriad', 'grow' instead of 'grown', 'import' instead of 'imported', 'munerous' instead of 'numerous', and 'eat any food' instead of 'eating any food'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they recur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 a fitting assessment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms and subject-verb agreement, such as 'food play' instead of 'food plays', 'which are not grow' instead of 'which are not grown', and 'that kind of fruits are' instead of 'those kinds of fruit are'. Additionally, punctuation errors like missing capital letters at the start of sentences ('further more') and incorrect spacing detract from the overall quality. Because errors persist and can occasionally cause strain for the reader, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.
