Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this contemporary epoch, there has been ongoing debates on consumerisms which influence the industries to make more products. However, a section of society deem that individual can easily get the overseas products over the all supermarket of the world. I firmly believe that this trend has both pros and cons which will be articulated in upcoming paragraphs.

To start with, there are many advantages of international food which nowadays very convenient to get in markets. Initially, the multinational consumer companies has made it possible to get the different products from the distinct countries through importing system. Thus, many of the shopping malls and restaurants are selling different cuisine of the world. A good example of this is Ramen which very popular noodles of the South Korea. Moreover, mass production and global competition make food not only cheaper but also ready to eat, many people in fast pace cities do not get time to make food.

On the contrary, despite there are many underlying issues which should be tacken seriouly. Firstly, importing food is significantly affecting to local vendors as well to farmers. Therefore, government should imposed the stricter law towards the companies by making policies of hiring. Last but not the least, international food is also adversly effecting to environment because people are transporting product from different modes of transportation. Hence leads to increasing cardon dioxide.

To recapitulate, although international food is not very costly and these products are very good for people who are working and do not have time to make food. Therefore, society tend to purchases instant food products. But, these thing is also directly or indirectly affecting to local people and leading to environmental changes which is harmfull to everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of global food availability in supermarkets, which fulfils the core requirements of an essay evaluating a development. A clear position is stated in the introduction where the author mentions that the trend has both pros and cons. Key ideas are presented, such as convenience, variety, and mass production as advantages, and negative impacts on local farmers and the environment as disadvantages. However, some ideas lack full extension and development; for instance, the mention of carbon dioxide is abrupt and underdeveloped. Overall, the task response aligns with the Band 6 descriptor because it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some areas remain under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to structure the text, such as "To start with", "On the contrary", and "To recapitulate". However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the concluding paragraph feels repetitive and struggles with logical progression, using phrases like "although international food is not very costly... Therefore, society tend to purchases instant food products. But, these thing is also...", which disrupts the flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in "these thing". These features place the response firmly in the Band 6 category for cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including phrases like "contemporary epoch", "multinational consumer companies", and "mass production". However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as "consumerisms" instead of consumerism, "over the all supermarket" instead of across all supermarkets, and "cardon dioxide" instead of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, collocation errors like "adversly effecting to environment" (affecting the environment) restrict the score. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is generally maintained, but errors in word formation and choice prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures through relative clauses and subordinating conjunctions. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ("individual can easily get", "companies has made", "society tend to purchases"), incorrect prepositions ("affecting to local vendors"), and passive voice construction issues ("should be tacken seriouly", "government should imposed the stricter law"). Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also occur, such as sentence fragments starting with "Hence leads to..." and "But, these thing...". Due to the high frequency of non-systematic structural errors, the writing aligns best with Band 5.0.
