Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries today, shoppers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced worldwide. It depends on consumers' choices. Well, from my perspective, it is both a positive and a detrimental development.

For instance, a lot of change happens in today's world; people have found it easier to buy food products that are not produced in their own country. It is a cup of tea for people to go to the supermarket and buy food items that are not available in their own country. For example, a doctor advice patient to eat avocado daily; it keeps you healthy and provides immunity to fight disease. The Avocado is not produced in their country, and he can go to the supermarket and buy that fruit. Sometimes, this is a blessing for the people.

Moreover, the food products are usually expensive compared to items that are produced in their homeland because it includes charges and taxes. People also develop habits of spending more money on useless products and showing off to others that we can buy any products that are produced all over the world. For Example, a child goes to the supermarket with their family, and the child goes to the food section, insisting that their father buy. It is not a fruitful act for the child and develops a bad habit. As far as my concerned, food products sometimes expire because it is not common for all people. People usually don't buy items daily. For Muslims countries, they usually read the ingredients used in food; therefore, it is more challenging for muslim people.

Based on the discussion, supermarket foods are beneficial for people around the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses the prompt by discussing both positive and negative aspects of consuming global food products. A clear position is stated in the introduction, declaring it 'both a positive and a detrimental development'. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes superficial. For instance, the example of a doctor advising a patient to eat avocados is somewhat narrow and relies on a personal anecdote rather than broader societal impacts. Additionally, some arguments, such as the mention of Muslim countries and expired foods, are slightly disjointed. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the support lacks full extension and depth, aligning well with a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak; the body paragraphs are quite dense and contain multiple disparate points, such as moving from avocados to expenses, children, and religious dietary laws within the same section. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes in a mechanical or repetitive manner, such as 'For example' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'For Muslims countries, they usually read the ingredients'. Progression is evident, but the lack of smooth transitions between sub-points prevents the response from reaching a higher band, placing it solidly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'detrimental development', 'immunity', and 'ingredients'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'It is a cup of tea for people' (which is misused idiomatically) and 'a doctor advice patient' (grammatical error affecting lexical flow). Informal phrases like 'showing off to others' detract from the academic tone. Spelling is generally accurate, but the frequent slips in word choice and lack of precision in academic style keep this response at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('a doctor advice patient', 'food products sometimes expire because it is not common'), pronoun agreement ('that we can buy any products... insisting that their father buy'), and awkward phrasing ('As far as my concerned'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the density of structural errors and awkward phrasing causes some difficulty for the reader and restricts the score to Band 5.5.
