Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, there is a trend in supermarkets of many countries who offer a wide range of products produced all over the world. Although, this trend can create some environmental and economic problems but i strongly believe this is a posiitive development as it gives more choices and range of food to consumer.

Firsly, the major advantage of this development is that it enables consumer to the global market. It gives more choices to the customer. He can buy the things that are naturally not grown in his town or country. Secondly, it provides him fresh food. He can get fresh food all the year even during cold winter months. By adapting this development, we can pevent the diseases getting from bad foods and our children will be more healthier.

The major disadvantage of this trend is the environmental problems caused by it. Exporting food from very long distances can burn a lot of fuel. Food goes bad sometime while travelling. It occurs because of lying for hours in the same position. The truck which is used to brought food creates pollution in the environment. Another disadvantage is the supply chain issues. At the time shortage of food the prices will go higher and un-affordable for the poor people of the country. Which can cause deaths of poor people. For example a bad weather can ruin the feilds, fruits and vegetables.

In conclusion, i know this development has some negative aspects but i believe this is a positive development as it gives more choices to the customer and provide fresh food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of global supermarkets before clearly stating a personal position in the introduction and conclusion. The writer argues that it is a positive development due to increased choice and access to fresh food all year round, while acknowledging environmental and supply chain drawbacks. However, some ideas are somewhat underdeveloped or rely on simple generalisations, such as the claim that children will be healthier or that bad weather causes deaths. This places the performance solidly at Band 6.0, as the task is addressed with relevant ideas, but full and rigorous development of every argument is lacking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement with a traditional four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Firsly', 'Secondly', and 'Another disadvantage', though there are occasional mechanical usages and minor spelling errors ('Firsly'). Referencing is generally clear, though transitions between some sentences in the third paragraph feel slightly abrupt. Overall, the logic progresses understandably, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to food import and supermarkets. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items and topic-related phrasing, such as 'global market', 'supply chain issues', and 'environmental problems'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, including 'pevent the diseases getting from bad foods', 'more healthier', 'feilds', and the grammatical error in 'used to brought food'. Because these errors do not impede communication and the range is sufficient to convey the core message, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, featuring subordinate clauses ('Although, this trend can create...' and 'He can buy the things that are naturally not grown...'). However, grammatical control is uneven. There are several noticeable errors in punctuation, capitalization ('i', 'Firsly'), and verb forms, such as 'supermarkets of many countries who offer', 'used to brought food', and fragment sentences like 'Which can cause deaths of poor people.' While these errors occur frequently throughout the text, they rarely impede overall communication, placing this response at Band 5.5.
