Student answer (Band 6.0)

Globalisation has changed the lives of people around the world. In many nations, food produced in different parts of the world is available in local supermarkets, and consumers can easily purchase it. There is no doubt that this is a positive development, and I will discuss the reasons for this in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, many positive aspects are associated with this development. First and foremost, it provides a wide variety of food products in the market. Secondly, individuals can taste different types of food according to their preferences. Another factor is that it motivates young people to visit different countries. Sometimes, individuals are influenced by healthier food products and change their eating habits as a result.

Moreover, it also enhances cultural exchange in society. Individuals can gain knowledge about the tastes, preferences, cultures, and traditions of people living in different parts and regions of the world. It is also beneficial for supermarket owners, as more and more people are interested in buying these food products. For example, the majority of supermarkets in America have a wide range of food products produced in different parts of the world.

In conclusion, after analysing the topic carefully, I strongly believe that this is a positive development because people can gain knowledge about different traditions, and it is also quite profitable for supermarket owners. Not only can people taste food from different traditions and cultures, but they can also experience the diversity of people from different parts of the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly taking a position that the availability of global food in supermarkets is a positive development. Key ideas such as variety, cultural exchange, and economic benefits for store owners are introduced. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth, relying on general assertions rather than fully elaborated examples. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains 249 words, which is one word short of the 250-word minimum. This minor under-length constraint, combined with under-developed supporting arguments, places the response firmly within the Band 6 descriptor range, where parts of the task are addressed but ideas remain somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The writer uses basic cohesive devices to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, the logical progression is at times mechanical, and referencing can be repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'This' or 'It'. While the structure is easy to follow, the lack of more sophisticated transitional phrasing and cohesive flexibility keeps the response at a Band 6 level for this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'globalisation', 'supermarkets', 'consumers', and 'cultural exchange'. There are also successful attempts at less common lexical items such as 'preferences', 'motivating', and 'profitable'. However, the vocabulary tends to be repetitive, reusing words like 'food products', 'different parts', and 'traditions' multiple times throughout the text. Word choice and spelling are generally accurate and do not impede communication, matching the Band 6 descriptor where vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks precise variety and sophisticated control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses ('because people can gain knowledge') and conditional or participial structures ('as more and more people are interested'). There is a reasonable level of grammatical accuracy, with many error-free sentences, such as 'Globalisation has changed the lives of people around the world.' Minor errors and awkward phrasings do occur, but they rarely impede communication. The variety of structures used and the general control over grammar fit comfortably into the Band 6 category, reflecting a satisfactory control of sentence structures with occasional non-systematic errors.
