Student answer (Band 5.5)

Recently, supermarkets can be used by customers for buying groceries and other food items all over the globe. I think this is definately a postitive development because supermarkets provide variety of options to choose from as well as are relatively cheaper as compared to local markets.

One of the primary reasons that individuals prefer supermarkets can be bacause of the variety of options that these markets provide. Normally, a supermarket contains various type of foods and ingredients to choose from as per consumer's liking. These markets generally contain all sorts of food items which makes it more convinient for people as compared to the normal market. For example, individuals can buy icecream and oranges in the same supermarket rather than going to a icecream shop and a fruit shop differently.

In addition to this, the price of the goods in the supermarket are relatively low as compared to the local market. This is mainly because supermarkets normally buy products in bulk which are cheaper than buying normally. So. they can still make some profit while selling produsts at a lower price to customers. Similarly, supermarkets provide shopping basket, food testing and a variety of services to the people. For example, a report showcases that Bhatbhateni supermarket of Nepal is selling foods 10% cheaper as compared to the normal market.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that supermarkets are a positive development in this modern age because it provide better quality products at a relatively low prices. I believe that people should get the option to choose their food which is provided by the supermarkets with a variety of other services.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear position that the global availability of food in supermarkets is a positive development. Both body paragraphs provide supporting reasons: variety and affordability. The ideas are generally relevant and extended, such as explaining how buying in bulk allows supermarkets to lower prices and offering a specific example regarding a Nepali supermarket. However, the development tends to be slightly repetitive, and the arguments could be pushed further with deeper analysis of global supply chains or local economic impacts rather than basic convenience. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task well, earning a band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph stating the writer's position, followed by two distinct body paragraphs focused on variety and price respectively, and concludes with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the primary reasons', 'In addition to this', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is logical and functional. However, there are some minor cohesive glitches, such as the broken sentence structure in the third paragraph ('So. they can still make...'), which slightly disrupts the flow. Pronoun referencing is generally clear, though referencing could be more sophisticated. This aligns well with the descriptors for a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'groceries', 'variety of options', 'affordability', and 'bulk'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes marred by awkward word choices or minor spelling and collocation errors, such as 'definately' instead of 'definitely', 'postitive', and 'convinient' instead of 'convenient'. Furthermore, phrases like 'going to a icecream shop and a fruit shop differently' sound unnatural. Despite these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message without impeding the reader's overall comprehension, placing it firmly at a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('that individuals prefer', 'which makes it more convinient') and conditional or causal structures ('This is mainly because...'). There are, however, noticeable grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. For instance, the opening sentence has a subject-verb mismatch ('supermarkets can be used by customers for buying' instead of active usage or better phrasing). Other errors include a fragmented sentence ('So. they can still make...') and minor prepositional or article slips ('at a lower price', 'selling foods'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the essay to achieve a band 6.0.
