Student answer (Band 6.5)
Access to food has become a lot easier these days in many countries. This access to food has also brought along a lot of variety of options as well. In many countries these days, you think of a food produced hundreds or maybe thousands of kilometers away from you and you just need to get to the nearest supermarket to access it. This convenience and quick access to overseas food has made a lot of people debate about its negative and positive aspects. For me personally, I believe that it is a positive development overall and the following reasons elucidate my point.
Access to good quality fruit is a fundamental food right. There are some geographical areas around the world which favor production of a certain kind of fruit and the climate of some areas doesn't. For example, the city of Multan in Pakistan produces mangoes which are hailed all over the world for their juiciness and their out-of-the-world sweet taste. They are exported all over the world and people love it when they can access such outstanding quality of mangoes right in their hometown. On the other hand, because there is a substantial amount of export for them, it generates considerable revenue for the farmers and gardeners in Pakistan. Overseas eaters get to eat the best quality and producers get to make good money from it.
Along with that, recipes travelling to other countries also become a source of cultural exchange among nations as well. People get to eat food of other countries and appreciate the diversity of food other people eat or have to eat. For example, pizza, invented in Italy, became one of the most abundantly eaten foods all over the world.
People against it also have their concerns regarding the quality of foreign food, the large environmental impact from increased transport, and less revenue for local farmers, etc.
In conclusion, even though there are some minor concerns regarding it, access to food produced all over the world available right in your neighboring supermarket is a positive development considering the availability of good quality produce that might not be produced in your home country, the economic factor, and the cultural exchange, etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of global food availability before clearly stating a personal position that it is a positive development. Ideas are extended and supported, such as providing the specific example of mangoes from Multan in Pakistan to illustrate economic benefits and superior quality. The counter-argument acknowledging environmental impacts and local farming concerns is also included, fulfilling the requirement for a balanced discussion before reiterating the writer's stance. This performance aligns well with Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction of the trend and the writer's stance, to specific supporting points regarding quality, economic benefits, and cultural exchange, followed by a brief acknowledgment of counter-arguments and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately, though some transitions feel slightly repetitive or conversational. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, satisfying the criteria for a Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'substantive amount of export', 'cultural exchange', and 'out-of-the-world sweet taste' (though the latter is somewhat informal). There are occasional slips in word choice and collocation, such as 'recipes travelling to other countries', but the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, earning a solid Band 6.5 or rounded Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional-like structures (e.g., 'even though there are some minor concerns...'). There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'food of other countries and appreciate the diversity of food other people eat or have to eat', but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences are clear and well-structured. Punctuation is generally sound, supporting a Band 6.5 rating.
